Clemson has suspended defensive tackle Vic Burley indefinitely after his arrest early Saturday morning, adding another hit to a position group the Tigers were already trying to steady before the season.
Head coach Dabo Swinney announced the move Saturday after Burley was arrested by the Clemson University Police Department for disorderly conduct.
“Earlier today, I was made aware of defensive tackle Vic Burley’s arrest by the Clemson University Police Department for disorderly conduct early Saturday morning. I have made the decision to suspend Vic from our football team indefinitely. We are extremely disappointed by his actions and decisions,” Swinney said.
The suspension lands at a significant moment for Burley, with Clemson set to open the 2026 season at LSU on Sept. 5, just two weeks away.
Burley, a 6-foot-4, 320-pound defensive tackle from Warner Robins, Ga., entered the fall as one of the more experienced pieces Clemson was counting on along an interior defensive line that remains largely unproven. Defensive coordinator Tom Allen singled out Burley and Champ Thompson this summer when talking about the players the Tigers needed to develop at the spot, saying, “Vic Burley and Champ Thompson, those guys taking that next step,” before adding that defensive tackle was “a critical group for us.”
But Burley’s availability had already been a concern early in fall camp. He was seen working in a yellow jersey, another sign of a career in which injuries have limited his chances to lock down a steady role.
Last season, Burley appeared in all 13 games, starting once. He played 175 defensive snaps and finished with 15 tackles, a half-tackle for loss, one pass breakup and two quarterback pressures.
Now, his indefinite suspension leaves Clemson with another unanswered question at defensive tackle heading into the opener.
