Clemson’s ACC opener against North Carolina has all the makings of a grind. The Tigers are only laying three points at home, and that number alone says plenty about where this game stands heading into Saturday’s noon kickoff on ESPN.
The matchup comes with a little extra intrigue because UNC is now in its second season under Bill Belichick, the six-time Super Bowl champion. But the bigger story may be the state of Clemson’s offense. Through two games, the Tigers have found the end zone on offense just twice - once late against LSU in garbage time and once after Georgia Southern muffed a punt and handed them the ball at the opponent’s 27.
That’s why the spread has tightened so much. Clemson opened as a much heavier favorite at most sportsbooks, but the line slid fast, with bettors clearly buying into the Tar Heels’ chances to hang around or pull the upset. ESPN’s analytics view it the same way, giving Clemson a 53.3% chance to win.
The injury report adds another layer. Clemson’s first ACC availability report of the season didn’t bring any real surprises, though senior backup quarterback Christopher Vizzina is listed as probable after dealing with a left elbow injury last week.
UNC has a more notable question mark: star defensive end Melkart Abou Jaoude, who led the ACC with 10.5 sacks last season, is questionable. Freshman receiver C.J.
Sadler is out after a speeding citation earlier this week.
Weather could also play a role. AccuWeather is calling for humid 86-degree conditions in Clemson with a “RealFeel” of 95 degrees, along with a 55% chance of rain and a 33% chance of thunderstorms. Clemson’s first two games were both delayed by lightning for roughly two hours before kickoff, though it remains unclear whether Saturday’s weather will interfere with the noon start.
On paper, Clemson should have enough to edge this one, but not by much. UNC’s defensive front has already flashed real bite with seven sacks, good for No. 11 nationally, and that could make life difficult no matter who starts at quarterback.
Still, there’s also reason to be cautious about projecting too much from Belichick’s team after a bizarre win over TCU in Ireland and a routine home win over an FCS opponent. A road game against an ACC foe is a different test.
Dabo Swinney’s call to start freshman Tait Reynolds feels like the right move, and it should give the home crowd a spark. If Reynolds keeps things clean, Clemson may be able to scrape out a narrow win and move to 1-0 in conference play.
