Clemson’s quarterback race is headed into fall camp with a clear front-runner and a challenger who isn’t backing down.
At Clemson’s annual preseason media day on Tuesday, offensive coordinator Chad Morris said Chris Vizzina will open camp as the guy, matching the message Dabo had already laid down in the spring. Vizzina, who is known around the facility as "CV," gets the first shot at steering the offense.
"Well, you know, coming out of spring, you know, coach made it clear. I mean, CB is our guy, and he'll start fall camp as the guy," Morris said.
That said, the job is anything but settled. True freshman Tait Reynolds, whom Morris calls "Tate," has pushed hard enough to keep the battle alive. Morris said Reynolds had a strong spring and kept building as the session went on.
"And but there's also Tate's Tate's right there, and and had a had a really good spring and came on at the end," Morris said. "And I think there's a great competition going on, and I think we've got to have competition in this entire offense at all positions."
Morris said both quarterbacks have spent the summer working, but the real separation will come once fall camp starts and the pads come on. He made it clear Clemson wants that edge everywhere on the offense, not just under center.
"And I think competition makes everybody better, and I think you're going to see that during the torso fall camp. But you know clearly, CV is our guy starting camp out. But they've both had an incredible summer and going to finish up over the next couple weeks, and so we we anticipate it being a great competition, not just in quarterback position, but all positions."
