Clemson QB Battle: Vizzina Leads, But Reynolds Makes His Move
Clemson football is gearing up for the 2026 season, and the quarterback race is heating up. New offensive coordinator Chad Morris has identified Christopher Vizzina as the frontrunner, but freshman Tait Reynolds is turning heads as a potential contender.
With the Tigers' spring game set for March 28, Morris is keen to see how each quarterback commands the offense and handles adversity. Vizzina, the most seasoned among the contenders, has been taking first-team reps, building on his experience from 14 games and a start against SMU in 2025.
Morris appreciates Vizzina's growing comfort with the new offense, which emphasizes tempo and explosive plays. "Coming out of spring, CV is our guy," Morris noted, while emphasizing the ongoing competition. "No one signed a lifetime contract."
The quarterback room is bustling with talent, including redshirt freshman Chris Denson, freshmen Tait Reynolds and Brock Bradley, and graduate student Trent Pearman. All are adapting to Morris' system, which he describes as "drinking water through a firehose." Improvement is evident, but mastery is still on the horizon.
Reynolds, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound three-star recruit, has emerged as a strong contender. He impressed during a recent practice, taking snaps with the second-team offense.
Morris praised Reynolds' progress, saying, "Tait's done a really good job this spring. He’s growing and making the most of his reps."
As Clemson prepares for the spring game, Morris is looking for quarterbacks to demonstrate leadership and resilience. He wants to see a reduction in procedural penalties and improved accuracy on vertical throws.
The return of top wide receivers like Bryant Wesco Jr. and T.J. Moore is expected to bolster the quarterbacks' performance in this area.
The stage is set for an exciting spring game, where Clemson's quarterbacks will showcase their skills and continue to vie for the starting role. With Vizzina leading the pack but Reynolds closing in, the competition is far from over.
