Clemson’s quarterback picture is still centered on true freshman Tait Reynolds heading into Week 8 against Virginia Tech, but Christopher Vizzina is making steady noise behind the scenes.
The redshirt junior, who has been sidelined with an elbow fracture since Week 2, had already drawn a positive update from Dabo Swinney last week. On Tuesday, Swinney said the momentum has kept building, pointing to Monday night’s practice as Vizzina’s strongest since he returned.
“He’s been awesome,” Swinney said on Tuesday. “And actually, last night was his best practice since Georgia Southern.
He’s starting to look like CV, which is really good. It’s the best I’ve seen him look.
It’s really encouraging. I thought he was really able to rip the ball, and he had a smile on his face because, I think, this is the best he’s been.”
That progress has come with Vizzina showing value in another way, too. Even while unavailable, he has remained a steady voice in the locker room and around the team.
“He’s been a great leader. I mean, he’s in our leadership meetings.
He’s talking to the guys; he’s encouraging the guys,” Swinney continued. “I mean, he’s awesome.”
Swinney also made clear how tough this stretch has been for the former four-star recruit, who barely had a chance to settle in as a starter before injury interrupted his season. Vizzina got the opening look in Baton Rouge and then the first three drives against Georgia Southern, where he accounted for one of Clemson’s only two passing touchdowns this season.
“Your heart breaks for him because, like I said, he didn’t even get a chance to really compete outside of his last three series,” he said. “And then he’s got a fracture in his arm, and he hasn’t really been able to do what he needs to do.”
What started as a situation where Vizzina was simply being prepared as an emergency option behind former walk-on Trent Pearman has now shifted. Swinney said the quarterback is moving closer to being available if Clemson needs him against Virginia Tech, which sits at 5-2.
“So it’s been more about getting him ready to be an emergency guy, but now he’s at a point where I think we can get him ready to play, based on what I saw last night,” Swinney finished. “So, we’ll see today, but I was very encouraged.”

Clemson Commit Trey Wimbley Keeps Giving Fans More To Dream On
Trey Wimbley keeps piling up reasons for Clemson fans to feel good about the future. The four-star receiver commit reached a major milestone in a recent high school game, becoming only the second wideout in Daniel High School history to top 2,000 career receiving yards while also moving into a tie for second place on the schools touchdown list. For a program that has long valued playmaking receivers, it is the kind of production that makes his commitment feel even more promising.
Wimbley is hardly the only Clemson target keeping the recruiting buzz alive. Three-star receiver commit Julian Cromartie scored four touchdowns in a recent game, while three-star defensive lineman Jaden Wuerth has been just as disruptive for Dutch Fork, piling up 15 sacks in eight games. Add in 2028 prospects Brendan Hall and Tyler Boyd showing up around games and staying on Clemsons radar, and there is plenty here to keep the Tigers recruiting momentum rolling in the background. Clemson May Have Fixed Two Problem Areas At The Perfect Time
Clemsons win over Charleston Southern offered a useful snapshot of where the Tigers may be settling in after some early-season uncertainty. Easton Ware gave the offensive line a reason for optimism at right guard, while the special teams operation looked much sharper under new coach Rich Bisaccia. For a team trying to firm up its identity before the schedule gets tougher, those are the kinds of encouraging signs that can quietly matter a lot.
The bigger question is whether those improvements can hold up when the competition rises and the passing game is asked to do more. Clemson still looks limited through the air, and the development of quarterback Tait Reynolds remains one of the most important storylines on the roster. If the Tigers really have cleaned up two problem areas, the timing could be ideal, but the offense still has a long way to go before the rest of the picture comes into focus. [Read more 🡒]
Clemson's ACC Hopes Could Come Down To A Messy Finish
Clemsons path through the ACC still has plenty of room to tighten, and with several league games left, the Tigers shot at the championship game may end up being decided by more than just wins and losses. At 4-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play, Clemson has put itself in the mix, but the margin for error is thin enough now that every remaining Saturday carries extra weight.
What makes the race even murkier is the leagues new tiebreaker setup for 2026, which leans on head-to-head results and overall body of work before leaving the final call in the hands of league officials if teams are still tied. Dabo Swinney said Clemsons win over Charleston Southern was the best game of the season, but the bigger test is still ahead, and the Tigers may not know their true position until the conference table gets messy at the finish.
