Clemson’s night at Cal brought more than a 24-10 win. It also brought a worrying scene in the first quarter, when junior running back David Eziomume was carted off after injuring his left leg on a kick return play.
Eziomume appeared to hurt the leg and knee area while blocking during the return, and after a long stoppage he left the field with his left leg in an air cast. The entire Clemson team came off the bench and onto the field to check on him before he was taken away. He was visibly emotional on the cart ride back to the locker room.
After the game, Dabo Swinney said he did not have a formal diagnosis, but the early feedback from Clemson’s training staff was grim.
Swinney said the outlook “doesn’t good.”
He also said the injury could end Eziomume’s season.
“I hate we lost Eziomume,” Swinney said Friday.
Eziomume later posted on X and sounded determined despite the setback.
“Lord I thank you, for you are an amazing God,” Eziomume wrote. “I never question your works for I know it all has meaning. I love (y’all) and I’ll be back soon.”
A replay on TV showed a Cal player falling sideways into Eziomume’s left leg/calf area as he tried to tackle Clemson return man Chris Johnson Jr. Eziomume went to the turf on his left leg and immediately reached for it in pain.
Swinney said Clemson’s trainers told him the injury may be similar to the one suffered by defensive tackle Markus Strong, an Oklahoma transfer who went down with a lower leg injury in Clemson’s Week 1 loss to LSU and needed season-ending surgery the following week.
Eziomume will be formally evaluated when Clemson gets back to campus.
“That’s a tough break for us there,” Swinney said. “We’ll confirm all of that, but didn’t sound good for him.”
The injury is a potential hit to Clemson’s depth chart at running back. Eziomume, a junior and former four-star recruit from Georgia, had been the Tigers’ No. 4 back behind starter Gideon Davidson, Johnson and Jarvis Green.
He has only one carry this season, but he made it count: an 11-yard touchdown against LSU in the fourth quarter. In 18 career games at Clemson, Eziomume has 27 carries for 144 yards and three catches for 10 yards.
If he is sidelined for a significant stretch or the rest of the year, Clemson would feel it beyond the offense. Eziomume has also been a dependable special teams player, and the Tigers already have other injury concerns in the backfield. Backup Jay Haynes missed Friday’s game and has dealt with injuries over the last two seasons.
Clemson’s list of notable season-ending injuries already includes Strong and freshman defensive back Polo Anderson, who tore his ACL during fall camp.
