Clemson added its quarterback of the future on Thursday, landing four-star Class of 2028 recruit Trace Hawkins.
The rising junior from Calhoun (Ga.) High School chose Dabo Swinney and the Tigers over Vanderbilt, Duke, Virginia Tech, Kentucky and LSU during a Thursday evening ceremony at his high school.
Hawkins is rated the No. 21 quarterback and No. 317 overall prospect in his class, according to 247Sports composite rankings. At 6-1 and 185 pounds, he has already built a strong résumé in two sports and on both sides of the stat sheet.
As a freshman in 2024, Hawkins helped Calhoun win a state championship and was named MVP of the title game at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. He followed that up with a productive sophomore season, throwing for 2,442 yards and 24 touchdowns against three interceptions.
He also added 153 rushing yards and three scores, averaging 216.3 total yards per game. In two seasons as Calhoun’s starter, he has gone 21-6.
Hawkins has also made noise on the basketball court for Calhoun, where he averaged 15 points, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game as a sophomore.
He becomes Clemson’s first commit in the Class of 2028. Like most programs, the Tigers generally only take one scholarship quarterback in each recruiting class.
The commitment also fits a pattern in Clemson’s recent quarterback recruiting. The Tigers have not signed a five-star quarterback since Cade Klubnik in the Class of 2022, though Christopher Vizzina briefly carried that label in the Class of 2023.

Clemson Still Faces A Tough RJ Godfrey Roster Decision
The latest roster wrinkle for Clemson comes from a court ruling that is suddenly giving older college players another avenue to extend their careers. Judge Charlotte Sweeney ordered the NCAA to grant an extra fifth year of eligibility to all athletes from the Class of 2022 who exhausted four seasons this spring, and former Tigers forward RJ Godfrey is among the players now covered by that decision.
