Clemson’s grip on North Carolina has never been tighter.
Saturday’s win at Memorial Stadium gave the Tigers their eighth straight victory over the Tar Heels, setting a new high-water mark for the series. No Clemson or North Carolina team had ever put together a run like this before.
The numbers behind it tell the story. Clemson is now 42-19-1 all-time against North Carolina, and that 42nd win moved the Tar Heels aside as the opponent Clemson has beaten the fifth-most in program history. Before Saturday, North Carolina had been tied with Virginia at 41.
This streak didn’t start with a grind-it-out finish. It began with Clemson’s 59-38 win in 2011, and it pushed past the Tigers’ previous best against the Tar Heels - a seven-game run from 1986 to 1992.
Last season, Clemson made the point in a hurry in Chapel Hill. The Tigers scored on their first offensive play and on each of their first four possessions in a 38-10 win at Kenan Stadium. Clemson was up 28-3 after one quarter and 35-3 at halftime, with Cade Klubnik completing 22 of 24 passes for 254 yards and throwing four touchdown passes.
This time, the path was messier. Clemson had to climb out of a 14-3 first-quarter hole before extending the streak.
The victory also keeps Clemson rolling in a broader sense against North Carolina schools. North Carolina is one of six opponents against which Clemson owns an active winning streak of at least eight games, alongside Furman, The Citadel, Wake Forest, Presbyterian and Boston College.
At home, the Tigers have now beaten North Carolina six straight times, leaving them one win shy of matching the longest home winning streak in the series. Clemson’s best run at Memorial Stadium against the Tar Heels came from 1982 to 1995, when it won seven in a row.
Dabo Swinney’s track record against North Carolina-based programs is just as striking. He is 42-6 as Clemson’s head coach against teams from the state of North Carolina, and that dominance gets even sharper in Death Valley, where he is 24-1 against those opponents.
Saturday also marked Swinney’s 189th career win and his 115th ACC regular-season victory.
So the streak grows again, and the gap in this series keeps widening. What used to be Clemson’s best run against North Carolina has been pushed into the past. Clemson has eight - and counting.
