Clemson’s roster turnover has clearly caught the attention of the national rankings crowd, and not in a good way.
PFF released its list of the best 50 college football players entering the 2026 season, and Clemson was shut out completely. That’s a sharp fall for a program that just watched a wave of key seniors move on, but it also opens the door for a new group of Tigers to step into the spotlight.
The departures are easy to spot. On offense, Clemson leaned on Cade Klubnik, Blake Miller and Antonio Williams last season.
On defense, Peter Woods, T.J. Parker and Avieon Terrell were the names driving things under Tom Allen.
None of them are there now, and PFF’s list reflects that drop-off in outside perception.
Still, the lack of Clemson names on the list doesn’t mean the cupboard is bare. It just means the Tigers have some proving to do.
Junior linebacker Sammy Brown is one of the clearest candidates to change that conversation. He took over as a starting linebacker in 2025 and handled the lead role in his first season in the lineup. PFF only included three linebackers in its top 50: Notre Dame’s Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa, Texas’s Rasheem Biles and Texas Tech’s Austin Romaine.
Brown has already shown enough through his first two seasons to be considered one of the more established linebackers in the country, and a big 2026 could push him into that same kind of national discussion.
Edge rusher Will Heldt also got left out, even though he led Clemson in sacks and tackles for loss in his first season after transferring from Purdue in 2025. PFF listed six defensive ends, but Heldt wasn’t among them.
The receiver group got similar treatment. Clemson has plenty of talent there, especially with junior Bryant Wesco Jr. and T.J.
Moore expected to lead the way. Only four wideouts made the ranking, and both Tigers were left off despite the kind of upside that puts them in the same conversation with some of the best young receivers in the country.
Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith came in at No. 1, which was hardly a surprise. The other wide receivers on the list were Texas’s Cam Coleman, Rutgers’ KJ Duff and Miami’s Malachi Toney.
Clemson will get a direct look at Toney and how he stacks up against its own receiver room on Oct. 3.
For Dabo Swinney, the 2026 season comes with a chance to flip the narrative. Clemson enters the year without much national buzz, and that may suit the head coach just fine. The source of confidence is simple: Swinney has often done his best work when fewer eyes are fixed on him.

Christopher Vizzina has found a way to use his platform at Clemson for something beyond football. ESPNs latest jersey-number rankings gave Clemson a rare kind of spotlight, placing three of the programs most recognizable names in the top spot for their numbers.
