FanDuel Sportsbook has Clemson as a 1.5-point favorite at Cal on Friday night, but next week’s home date with Miami comes with a far different number: the Tigers are getting 17.5 points. The kickoff time for that Week 5 ACC showdown has not been set, and depending on what happens Friday night, Clemson could be headed for its fourth primetime or later start in five weeks.
That looming line is hard to ignore. If Clemson beats Cal, or even keeps things close, Miami could be walking into Death Valley under the lights. Even then, the spread still reflects a reality that would have felt unthinkable not long ago.
Miami is the early favorite to win the ACC, and the Hurricanes look like one of the few teams with a real national title ceiling this season under Mario Cristobal. That is the same kind of territory Clemson once owned under Dabo Swinney.
The shift also brings back an uncomfortable detail: Clemson’s former athletic director Dan Radakovich left for his alma mater, Miami, and the Hurricanes’ rise has lined up with that move. Either way, it’s a reminder of how far Miami has climbed and how far the Tigers have fallen from the spot they held for years. The six-year stretch from 2015 to 2020 is already a long time in the past.
For now, Clemson has to handle the immediate task. The Tigers need to get past Cal on the road first.
A win would move them to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in ACC play. If they can stack a third straight victory, maybe that gives them enough momentum to make things interesting against Miami next weekend.
Still, the Hurricanes are not a perfect team. And if Clemson wants to beat them, it will take almost everything going right.
