Clemson has made the cut for one of the most sought-after defensive backs in the 2028 class.
On Monday afternoon, Alabama safety CJ Craig-James released his top 12 schools, and Clemson was in the mix with Miami, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Georgia, LSU, Oregon, Alabama, Florida, Vanderbilt, Cal and Auburn.
Craig-James, a 6-foot-3, 185-pound safety, is a consensus four-star prospect. The 247Sports Composite lists him as the No. 77 overall player, the No. 7 safety and the No. 6 recruit in Alabama.
His rise has been fast. Craig-James broke out this past season at Parker High School in Birmingham, where he finished with 37 tackles, four interceptions, two pass breakups, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery touchdown.
The recruitment picture looked very different at the start of the year. Craig-James opened 2025 with only one FBS offer, from Kennesaw State. As of July 21, that number has climbed to 45 total offers.
He spent much of the season and the months that followed making the rounds on unofficial visits, with most of those trips coming to in-state schools. During the season, he visited Alabama three times and also checked out Georgia Tech, Mississippi State, Auburn and South Carolina once each.
After the season, the visits kept coming. Craig-James went back to Alabama, Auburn and Georgia Tech once apiece, and also made trips to Georgia, Florida, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Texas, Notre Dame and Miami.
Clemson still does not have an offer out to Craig-James, but the connection is clearly there. The two sides have stayed in regular contact, and the Tigers are known for being selective about when they extend offers, especially this early in the cycle.
According to On3’s Chad Simmons, Craig-James said Clemson is one of five programs setting the pace for him. The others are Alabama, Miami, Notre Dame and Ohio State. Clemson’s pitch is built around two things: its facilities and its track record of developing defensive backs into NFL players year after year.
Craig-James also plans to take in multiple games from his top schools, starting with Clemson’s season opener against LSU in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
And Clemson’s interest in Alabama doesn’t stop there. The Tigers are also recruiting several other top prospects from the state, including four-star offensive lineman Joey Fleming, four-star tight end Kaleb Ballard and four-star offensive lineman Samuel Bailey.
