Clemson finally has its answer at quarterback, but Dabo Swinney waited until the last possible moment to give it.
After spending the preseason keeping the competition under wraps, Swinney announced late Tuesday morning that Christopher Vizzina will start for the Tigers. The move had been widely expected, but the timing only added to the unease around a program that has already been under plenty of pressure.
For the third straight year, Clemson chose not to release a depth chart before its Week 1 game. That approach might have passed as gamesmanship once, but this time it came with a bigger problem: Swinney wouldn’t even say who his starter was going into a road trip to LSU.
When asked Monday who would get the nod, he said, "We're gonna run somebody out there ... it's been a great competition," Swinney said. "That's where we are.
Gotta go play some games and see from there." He added, "They can all run the Clemson offense.
Whoever's out there has gotta run the offense."
Swinney didn’t stop there. He made it clear he still viewed the quarterback room as unsettled, saying, "In my mind, we still don't have any starters," Swinney said.
"Now, we're gonna run some guys out there Saturday. And then we'll start to make some decisions, because we'll have some performance."
That stance only intensified the noise around the Tigers, especially with veteran Christopher Vizzina and freshman Tait Reynolds battling for the job. The expectation had been that Vizzina would win it, but Swinney’s refusal to confirm anything kept the story alive far longer than anyone around the program probably wanted.
The timing matters because Clemson is walking into a tough opener at LSU, where uncertainty tends to get punished fast. The Tigers are 10.5-point road underdogs, with FanDuel Sportsbook listing LSU at -400 on the moneyline and Clemson at +310. A cleaner quarterback decision earlier in camp might have trimmed some of that doubt, but instead the suspense lingered right up until the final stretch before kickoff.
And this isn’t happening in a vacuum. Clemson is trying to bounce back from its worst season in nearly two decades, and last year’s team stumbled out of the gate in ugly fashion against LSU before finishing 7-6 and unranked. Swinney knows how much this season needs to feel different from the start, which is why the quarterback indecision drew even more attention.
There’s also a familiar Clemson reference point here. Back in 2014, Deshaun Watson eventually beat out Cole Stoudt in a quarterback battle that helped change the program’s direction.
This time, the suspense never really turned into a true surprise. It just dragged on.
If Clemson gets through Saturday night without getting blown out, Swinney will likely frame the whole thing his own way. That’s part of the deal with him. But the longer the quarterback situation stayed murky, the more it fed the sense that Clemson was making things harder than they needed to be.
The Tigers now have their starter. The question is whether waiting this long to name him cost them anything before the season even began.
