Clemson Has A Real Shot To Look Like A Contender Again

Can Clemson reclaim their former glory and prove skeptics wrong this season as a prime contender for the ACC Championship?

Clemson may be entering the season without a ranking next to its name, but ESPN’s Heather Dinich isn’t buying the idea that the Tigers are fading.

During a recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Dinich said she expects a noticeable step forward from Dabo Swinney’s team and even floated a trip to the ACC Championship Game against Miami.

"I will be shocked, absolutely shocked, if Clemson is not better this year," Dinich said. "I’m gonna go on a limb here, [they will be] playing Miami in the ACC Championship."

She stopped short of guaranteeing Clemson would beat Miami in Death Valley, but she didn’t dismiss that possibility either. Dinich pointed to the quarterback situation as a concern, though she noted that issue isn’t exclusive to Clemson.

She also praised the Chad Morris hire and said Tom Allen, now in year two as defensive coordinator, should be a major factor. In her view, Clemson is on "an upward trajectory" and in playoff contention.

The Tigers are trying to move past a season that fell far short of expectations. The program is coming off its worst year in more than a decade, and that reality has fueled a determined reset around Swinney’s staff. Morris is being counted on to stabilize the offense, while Allen and offensive line coach Matt Luke are seen as experienced additions who fit the job they’ve been asked to handle.

Dinich also relayed Swinney’s concerns about how rough last season’s secondary was, but she emphasized that Allen now has a full season in the system. She pointed to his track record at Indiana and said he played a significant role in Penn State reaching the national semifinals two years ago during his lone season there. With Sammy Brown taking charge, she believes the defense should be much improved.

Clemson’s path back into the league’s biggest stage is there for the taking. Dinich noted that among Clemson, Louisville, Miami, and SMU, only one has won the ACC before, and she suggested that kind of championship experience still matters. She also said the conference effectively has one playoff lock and three serious contenders for the remaining spot.

Miami may be the favorite in the broader picture, even if Dinich said it would be surprising for the Canes to miss the playoffs after last year’s national title run. Still, she added that Mario Cristobal has a habit of losing games he shouldn’t. Clemson, Louisville, and SMU are all in the mix, and Dinich expects one of them to meet Miami in Charlotte.

Clemson does not play Louisville or SMU during the regular season, but if the Tigers handle their other seven ACC games and take care of business against LSU and South Carolina in non-conference play, the route to Charlotte becomes very real. Dinich said a win there would lock up a playoff berth, while a loss might not necessarily end Clemson’s postseason hopes.

For a program eager to erase last year’s disappointment, the opportunity is right there. No team in the ACC appears more determined to reclaim the league crown than Clemson.

Clemson's Ground Game Suddenly Hinges On Who Chad Morris Trusts

Clemsons run game has spent the offseason looking for a clearer identity, and the latest scrimmage offered a glimpse of why the staff thinks the answer could come from a fresh mix of legs and decision-making. Christopher Vizzina and Tait Reynolds have been part of the conversation at quarterback, while running backs Gideon Davidson and Chris Johnson Jr. are part of the push to give Chad Morris more options as the Tigers try to rebound from last seasons shortcomings on the ground.

What makes this worth watching now is how much the rotation still seems to be taking shape. Davidson flashed the kind of burst that can change a practice, and Johnson has been one of the more intriguing pieces in the backfield since arriving from SMU, giving Clemson a versatile option as the coaching staff sorts out roles. Morris still has to decide which players he can trust when the season starts, and for a ground game trying to become a strength again, that answer may matter as much as any scheme tweak. Clemsons Offense Still Has One Big Identity Question In Camp

Clemson is nearing the two-week mark of fall camp and getting ready for its second scrimmage, with the offense still in search of a clearer personality. For a program that was left out of the preseason AP poll for the first time since 2011, that lack of national buzz has only sharpened the focus inside camp, where the Tigers are trying to sort through the pieces and define what this group wants to be under offensive coordinator Chad Morris.

There is optimism around the quarterback room and the skill talent, but the bigger question is how it all fits together when the pads come on. While Tom Allen works in his second season to steady a pass defense that now has three new starters in the secondary through the transfer portal, Clemsons offense is still chasing the kind of identity that can make the whole operation feel more certain as the season approaches. Dabo Swinneys Latest Clemson Roster Moves Raise New 2026 Questions

Clemsons roster has already started to take on a different shape for 2026, with a couple of familiar names showing up in new spots as fall camp continues. Chris Denson has been working at a new position this month, while Dietrick Pennington has added another role to his workload, giving the Tigers a little more to sort through as the season approaches.

Those changes are now reflected on Clemsons official 2026 roster, and they were part of the latest roster conversation around Dabo Swinneys program. For a team always trying to find the right mix of depth and versatility, the adjustments hint at how Clemson is evaluating pieces heading into the next cycle, even if the full picture of who fits where is still coming into focus.
