Clemson Gets A Late Injury Boost Before Virginia Tech

As both Clemson and Virginia Tech prepare for their crucial ACC clash, injury news looms large with key players on both sides facing uncertain statuses.

Clemson will head into its Week 8 matchup with Virginia Tech carrying a long list of unavailable players, while the Hokies’ injury report includes one starter who could be in doubt for Friday night.

Virginia Tech cornerback Thomas Williams is listed as questionable on the initial report released Oct. 21.

Williams, a Greenville native, has piled up eight total tackles, two forced fumbles, one interception and one pass defended this season. He has started three games and was listed as a starter on Virginia Tech’s official depth chart this week.

The Hokies also have backup cornerback Cam Chadwick Jr. on the report, though he is listed as probable.

Clemson, meanwhile, has wide receiver Gordon Sellars III listed as out. Tigers coach Dabo Swinney said Sellars has a concussion and is moving through concussion protocol. Sellars has three catches for 8 yards in a reserve role.

There is better news elsewhere for Clemson. Defensive tackle Devarrick Woods and running back Jarvis Green do not appear on the injury report, and Swinney has said he expects both to return against Virginia Tech.

The Tigers also got an update on backup quarterback Christopher Vizzina, who Swinney said is having his "best week by far" of the season and is 90% healthy. Vizzina has been working back from a small fracture in his left elbow, an injury he first suffered against Georgia Southern on Sept. 12.

Although Vizzina was removed from Clemson’s injury report against California on Sept. 25 before kickoff, he has not fully returned. He was available only in emergencies against Miami and Charleston Southern. After the Charleston Southern game, Swinney said he would not have had a problem using Vizzina against the Buccaneers, but Vizzina told him he was not ready and Brock Bradley should go in instead.

"I asked him. I said, 'Do you want to go in, or do you want to put Brock in?'

And he's like, 'Let's put Brock in,'" Swinney said. "So that was really his call.

Coach C.V."

Clemson and Virginia Tech meet Oct. 24 at home for a 7 p.m. kickoff on ESPN. The Tigers are 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the ACC, while the Hokies enter at 5-2 and 2-2 in conference play.

Clemson injury report: all players listed are out - CB Corian Gipson, S Polo Anderson, CB Shavar Young Jr., WR Gordan Sellars III, WR Cole Turner, RB David Eziomume, WR Chase Byrd, DE Armon Mason, OL Mason Wade, DT Markus Strong.

Virginia Tech injury report: LB George Ballance (out), OL Justin Terry (out), DL Emmett Laws (out), WR Shamarius Peterkin (questionable), CB Thomas Williams (questionable), OL Nathaniel Wright (questionable), OL Lucas Austin (questionable), OL Montavious Cunningham (questionable), WR L.J. Dabo Swinney Just Drew A Line In Clemsons Biggest Debate

Clemsons homecoming week brought a familiar kind of Dabo Swinney conversation, the one that tends to surface whenever the Tigers hit a rough patch and the larger debate about roster-building comes back into focus. In a press conference before the game, Swinney leaned into the programs current rebuilding phase and made it clear he still believes in the developmental model that has helped define Clemson under his watch, even as college football has changed around him with the transfer portal and player compensation.

Swinney said Clemson will keep prioritizing high school recruiting while also using transfers where it makes sense, and he pushed back on the idea that his philosophy is somehow behind the times. He also acknowledged how difficult it is to sustain the level of success Clemson once reached, but framed the task as building something consistently strong over time rather than chasing quick fixes. Dabo Thinks Tait Reynolds Is Turning A Corner Despite Lingering Doubts

The signs are subtle, but Dabo Swinney thinks Tait Reynolds is beginning to settle in. After another Clemson outing, Swinney pointed to the quarterbacks growing comfort with protections, a better feel for avoiding sacks and some added usefulness in the running game as evidence that the game is starting to slow down for him.

Reynolds finished 17-of-26 for 127 yards and added 40 yards on seven carries against Charleston Southern, which gave Clemson a steadier presence at the position even if the overall picture still feels unfinished. The performance fit Swinneys optimistic view, but Reynolds season has been inconsistent enough that it is still fair to wonder whether this was truly his best outing or just the latest step in a longer adjustment. Vic Burley Is Giving Clemson A Second Chance Story To Watch

Vic Burleys return has given Clemson an interesting subplot to watch on the defensive front. After serving a multi-game suspension for disorderly conduct, the defensive tackle was back on the field for the ACC opener against North Carolina and wasted little time making his presence felt, recording the first sack of his career. He had missed the LSU and Georgia Southern games, but his return added another body to a rotation that has been trying to settle in early in the season.

Burley is still working to earn back consistent playing time, and the larger question now is how quickly he can turn that second chance into a bigger role. He has said hes grateful for the opportunity to return and wants to keep improving while helping the Tigers in whatever way he can, which makes his next few outings worth following closely.
