Clemson Freshman DB Suddenly Has A Real Chance To Break Through

With starting nickel Corian Gipson sidelined for the season, Clemson fans might witness the emergence of promising freshman cornerback Marcell Gipson Jr. as he steps into a larger role.

Clemson’s secondary is about to get a little thinner in one spot, but it may also create a path for a freshman cornerback to finally get on the field.

With starting nickel Corian Gipson out for the rest of the season after re-aggravating a knee injury against Miami, sophomore Auburn transfer Donovan Starr is stepping into the role. Dabo Swinney said Starr has “made a move these last couple of weeks,” but the change also loosens things up elsewhere in the defensive backfield.

That could matter for true freshman Marcell Gipson Jr., the only cornerback Clemson signed in its 2026 class. Swinney said Gipson had been trending upward before a rib injury slowed him down in camp and kept him out of football activities, including practice, for much of the fall.

“Marcell was another guy that I would say was on the rise in camp and on his way to being a guy that probably would have gotten to play early, like game one,” Swinney said on Tuesday.

Gipson has been healthy for the last few weeks, and Clemson appears to be watching his progress closely. Swinney said the opening at nickel and at TIGER gives him a clearer lane.

“This is definitely creating more opportunity for him at corner and our TIGER position,” he finished. “So he’s a guy that we’re gonna need down the stretch.”

For now, Gipson is not listed on the two-deep. Misun Kelley is the backup at TIGER behind Starr and also the backup cornerback behind Elliot Washington, while Branden Strozier is the other backup corner behind projected first-rounder Ashton Hampton.

Even so, a first look at Gipson on defense wouldn’t be a surprise in the coming weeks if Swinney’s comments are any indication.

Gipson arrived at Clemson as a three-star prospect from South Oak Cliff in Dallas, Texas, and he brought a strong high school résumé with him. He spent three years on varsity, was a three-time first-team all-district pick, and earned first-team all-state honors as a junior in 2024 at both defensive back and kick returner.

He also helped South Oak Cliff win a 5A D2 State Championship as a senior, with the Golden Bears finishing No. 21 in the country and No. 1 in Texas.

Football runs deep in his family, too. Gipson is the third member of his family to play Division I football. His father, Marcell Gipson Sr., played five seasons at Wyoming from 2006 to 2010, and his uncle, Tashaun Gipson, played there for four years from 2008 to 2011 before going on to a 12-year NFL career.

Clemsons New Depth Chart Sends A Clear Message Up Front

Clemson used the bye week to sort through a few things up front, and the updated depth chart ahead of Charleston Southern offered a clear look at where the Tigers are leaning. The biggest change came on the offensive line, where coach Matt Luke made Easton Ware the starter at right guard over Ronan OConnell, a move that reflects how the staff wants to settle the group entering the next stretch of the season.

There were also notable shifts on defense, where Darien Mayo moved into a co-starter role along the interior and Champ Thompson was listed as a co-starter at defensive tackle. Dabo Swinney pointed to both performance and health as part of the evaluation, and the changes suggest Clemson is still fine-tuning its rotation even with a lighter opponent next on the schedule. Clemson Has Little Margin For Error Entering A Crucial Early Stretch

Clemson enters the new season in a familiar but unforgiving spot, picked sixth in the ACC preseason poll after finishing behind five other teams with 623 points. That kind of placement does not leave much room to settle in, especially with the Tigers trying to navigate an early stretch that will help define how they are viewed both inside the league and on the NCAA Tournament bubble.

The challenge gets even steeper with Zac Foster and Carter Welling still working their way back from torn ACLs, leaving questions about how much they can contribute early. There is at least one bright spot in the backcourt, as freshman guard Harris Reynolds drew a Preseason ACC Rookie of the Year vote, and Clemson's non-conference schedule now looms as a major proving ground for a team that needs answers quickly. Clemsons Defensive Line Is Getting A Return Fans Have Waited On

Clemsons defensive front is close to getting a useful piece back in the mix. Transfer defensive tackle Kourtney Kelly is expected to return for the Charleston Southern game after working his way back from an ACL injury that kept him out to start the 2026 season, and Dabo Swinney said Kelly has been ramped up in practice as Clemson looks to rework its rotation up front.

For a unit that counted on Kelly as a notable offseason addition, the timing matters. The junior transfer from West Georgia gives Clemson another body and a little more size inside, even if the Tigers still have to see how quickly he can settle back into game speed after the layoff. [Read more 🡒]
