Christopher Vizzina has spent most of his Clemson career waiting, learning, and competing. Now, after arriving in January 2023 as a mid-year enrollee and backing up new starter Cade Klubnik, he’s the Tigers’ Week 1 quarterback.
That path, though, was anything but simple. Vizzina has had to navigate a long stretch of development behind Klubnik, then survive another offseason battle in a crowded quarterback room. Freshman Tait Reynolds pushed him all the way into game week before the job settled on Vizzina.
Still, the redshirt junior said Monday he wouldn’t trade the route that brought him here.
“Just my love for Clemson is what stands out when I think about the journey, and there’s been some tough days, to be honest,” Vizzina said on Monday. “Some days, you just want to play football, but I wouldn’t change anything about it now, standing up here and accomplishing that.”
The Birmingham, Alabama, native pointed to the twists that shaped the last year and a half. Klubnik’s decision to stay last offseason, despite NFL buzz, ended up giving Vizzina more time to learn behind a quarterback headed to the league. Then this summer and fall, he had to hold off Reynolds and the rest of the room.
“It’s obviously not gone how I planned it to go, and rarely do things happen the way we think they’re going to go,” Vizzina said. “It’s all in the Lord’s plan, and I’ve been trusting that.”
He also credited Reynolds for sharpening him throughout camp.
“I feel like I’ve needed it to become a better player,” Vizzina added. “The room has needed it, the team has needed it, there’s competition at every single position on the team, and it’s been a great fall camp.”
Even with the starting nod in hand, Vizzina knows nothing is guaranteed. Dabo Swinney said Reynolds could still see a series or two this weekend, and if he’s more electric than Vizzina, the job could shift quickly.
That leaves Vizzina with a straightforward assignment: win.
He said the focus has to be on performance and on putting Clemson in position to beat LSU on Saturday.
“I got to go win the game, or we, as a team, have to go win the game,” he said. “It’s based on performance. . .it’s not a lifetime contract. So, if I want to keep standing up here in front of you guys, I've got to perform.”
If someone had told the 2023 version of Vizzina that his first chance to open a season as Clemson’s official starter would come in 2026 against a top 15 LSU team, he said he would have been stunned. But that’s the spot he’s in now, and he’s eager for it.
“I don’t think you could write it up any better,” he said. “What an opportunity for us as a team. I’m very excited.”
