Clemson Faces A Defining Road Test After That Virginia Tech Loss

Rivalries and redemption are at play as Clemson aims to upset the odds in their crucial ACC clash against Florida State at the hostile and revamped Doak Campbell Stadium.

Clemson heads to Tallahassee on Saturday with a chance to steady itself, and the setting should be as loud as it gets. The Tigers meet Florida State at Doak Campbell Stadium on Halloween night, with Dabo Swinney expecting exactly the kind of road atmosphere that can turn a game into a test.

“I’ve always loved going on the road,” he said on Tuesday. “You know I love a good hostile crowd, and it’ll be one. We’ve seen a bunch down there.”

For Clemson, this is the second true road environment of the season, and the first one didn’t go the way the Tigers wanted when they traveled to LSU to open the 2026 season. It also marks Clemson’s first game in Florida State’s newly renovated stadium, something the Tigers did not face on their last trip to Tallahassee two years ago.

The Tigers are trying to bounce back from a home loss to Virginia Tech, a game Clemson had in hand before the Hokies put together a long, methodical drive to swing things late. Clemson then failed to convert on downs when it had a chance to answer, and that result knocked the program out of ACC Championship contention.

Freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds will be at the center of the response Clemson needs. The offense has dealt with growing pains all season, but Reynolds said the challenge is part of the appeal.

“I’m never going to back down from a challenge,” he said on Wednesday. “I think it’s going to be really cool and a unique opportunity, and just excited to play there. It’s a great blessing.”

Florida State brings a roster with some familiar names for Clemson, including players the Tigers saw last season in their win in Death Valley. There are also opponents Clemson has already faced in different colors, like quarterback Ashton Daniels and running back Quintrevion Wisner. Daniels was Stanford’s starter two seasons ago when the Cardinal played Clemson for the first time as ACC opponents in 2024, while Wisner went over 100 yards and scored twice for Texas in the first round of the College Football Playoff.

The matchup lands at a point where both programs are trying to climb back toward the top. Clemson and Florida State shared the ACC championship from 2022-24, but both are looking to get back there. The Tigers remain a long shot, but a win over a conference rival would still give them a lift entering the final month of the regular season.

Swinney said his team will need to be ready for a “really good football team.”

“I promise you nobody’s going to care about the records when we kick this one off,” he said. “This is Clemson-Florida State, so it’ll be a great opportunity.”

Florida State is a 5.5-point favorite, according to FanDuel Sportsbook, with the over/under set at 49.5 points. Weather could also play a role, with sporadic rain possible in Tallahassee and temperatures expected to be in the mid-70s around kickoff before dipping to no lower than 70 degrees. There is a 50% chance of precipitation throughout the game.

Florida State leads the all-time series 21-17, but Clemson has won the last two meetings. The Tigers won at Doak in 2024 and then defended home turf in 2025, taking the last matchup 24-10 last November.

Clemson Just Added A Local Specialist Fans Will Want To Track

Clemson added a familiar name to its future special teams plans with the commitment of Noah Hardy, a four-star kicker from Fort Mill, South Carolina, for the 2027 recruiting class. Hardys path to Clemson included multiple campus visits and a full scholarship offer after conversations with coach Dabo Swinney, giving the Tigers an in-state specialist with both early interest and clear upside.

Hardy arrives with a reputation for strong kicking in high school and a situation that should let him develop without immediate pressure, working behind current kicker Nolan Hauser. For Clemson, it is another sign that the staff is still willing to invest scholarship resources in specialists who can matter down the line, especially when the player is local and already familiar with the programs expectations. Clemsons Frontcourt Suddenly Rests On One Tiger Before Schedule Turns

Clemsons frontcourt picture has changed quickly before the non-conference slate even gets rolling. Brad Brownell confirmed that Carter Welling will miss all of non-conference play after tearing an ACL in March, leaving the Tigers to adjust their interior rotation as they move into a stretch that includes Stetson, American, North Dakota and Georgetown, along with a trip to the Maui Invitational.

Dylan Faulkner has stepped into the biggest scoring role up front in Wellings absence, giving Clemson a clearer focal point inside as the schedule stiffens. The Tigers do not have much time to sort out the rest of the rotation, and the coming weeks should show how much pressure Faulkner can handle while Brownell pieces together the frontcourt around him. Clemson Faces A Big Response Test At Florida State

Clemsons next chance to steady the season comes under the lights on Oct. 31, when the Tigers head to Doak Campbell Stadium to face Florida State in a nationally televised game on ESPN. Its a matchup that carries plenty of familiar ACC weight, but it also arrives with both teams trying to find firmer footing, with Clemson sitting at 4-3 and the Seminoles at 3-4.

For Clemson, the setting adds to the pressure. A road trip to Tallahassee on Halloween night is the kind of stage that can either help reset the mood around a team or deepen the questions, and the Tigers will get their shot in a prime-time window at 7 p.m. The broadcast spotlight will be there, and so will the expectation that Clemson responds with something more convincing than just another ordinary conference game.
