Clemson is giving Chris Denson a fresh look, and Dabo Swinney isn’t ready to lock him into one lane just yet.
The former quarterback spent the spring buried on the depth chart, barely seeing the field in Clemson’s spring game while Christopher Vizzina appeared to be the man to beat behind center. Now, with fall camp underway, Swinney is exploring whether Denson’s future might be at multiple spots instead of just quarterback.
Last Wednesday, Swinney said Denson could work at several positions in 2026, including quarterback in more run-heavy packages, running back or wide receiver. During the media viewing period at Clemson’s open practice last week, Denson was wearing a yellow non-contact jersey and working out at wide receiver.
Swinney said he likes to let his assistants handle development at that spot group, even if he usually has a strong feel for what he wants to see.
“That’s a position that every head coach has something and every head coach kind of gravitates toward things,” he said, “whether it’s meetings or the practice field or things like that.”
“We got some great coaches over there, and I kind of try to let them do their thing, but it’s still one of those things that I just see things from a certain lens,” he said, “and so I haven’t really had a chance to see him in that light yet, so we’ll see.”
There’s no question about Denson’s athleticism. Clemson fans got a glimpse of it in the win over Furman last November, when he logged only two drives in the fourth quarter and both ended in touchdowns. The Plant City, Fla., native finished with 106 yards on six carries, plus both a passing and rushing touchdown.
For Swinney, the challenge now is figuring out where that skill set fits best. He said Denson’s ability to run and change direction is easy to evaluate, but he still hasn’t had enough time to judge him as a wide receiver.
“Obviously, we know he can run, and he can change directions and that’s easy to evaluate, but I have not had a chance to really evaluate him as a wideout yet, and I don’t even know if that’s the best position for him,” he said.
Clemson still has several weeks of fall camp left before its Sept. 5 trip to Baton Rouge, La., to face LSU, so there’s time for the Tigers to sort it out. Denson’s path at quarterback may have narrowed, but a new opportunity has opened as a possible gadget player.
“I can’t really say that until I go through the process with him, but he’s done a great job. I mean, he looks great physically, looks great, so [I’m] excited,” Swinney said. “He’s one of those guys that we've got to figure out what’s the best spot for him, and then we’ll go from there.”
