Ashton Hampton Faces Another Clemson Test With NFL Buzz Growing

Ashton Hampton continues to cement his reputation as a top NFL prospect with another high-stakes showdown against Syracuse's standout receiver this weekend.

Clemson keeps asking Ashton Hampton to do the hard thing, and he keeps answering.

That’s been the story in the Tigers’ secondary all season, where Hampton has spent week after week lined up across from the opposing team’s top receiver. Through Clemson’s first eight games, the star cornerback has already seen plenty of the ACC’s best pass catchers, and he’s settled into the role as the best player on Tom Allen’s defense.

The latest example came against Miami a little over a month ago, when Hampton drew the assignment of covering Malachi Toney, the league’s leader in receptions, yards and touchdowns at the time. Toney entered that game with 34 catches for 564 yards and six scores in just four games, but Hampton helped hold him to five receptions for 40 yards.

Toney has been productive in every other game this season, but not against Clemson.

Hampton followed that up last week with another difficult matchup, this time against Florida State’s Duce Robinson. At 6-foot-6, Robinson brought a different kind of challenge, and he did manage one impressive sideline grab in the first quarter with Hampton in coverage.

But that was about all Florida State got from him. Robinson finished with just two catches for 31 yards.

Now Hampton gets another big test, and this one comes against Syracuse wideout Umari Hatcher.

Hatcher has been one of the ACC’s most productive receivers this season, even in an up-and-down year for the Orange. The sixth-year senior ranks third in the conference with 60 receptions, second with 952 receiving yards and second with eight touchdown catches. He has also become quarterback Steve Angeli’s clear favorite target.

Angeli has battled injuries all season, but he has helped Syracuse stack back-to-back wins over North Carolina and SMU over the last two weeks. His connection with Hatcher has only grown stronger, which puts even more pressure on Hampton to win his matchup.

If Hampton can keep Hatcher from taking over the game, it would make life much tougher for Angeli and the Syracuse passing attack to create explosive plays. Hampton is currently projected as a first-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft, and another shutdown performance against one of the ACC’s top receivers would only strengthen that case.

For Hampton, the assignment never changes. The opponent does.

Clemsons Secondary Still Has One Costly Habit Dabo Wants Gone

Clemsons secondary has come a long way this season, and the numbers show it. The Tigers have climbed to 57th nationally in passing yards allowed and sit seventh in total pass breakups, a clear sign that defensive coordinator Tom Allens approach, the promotion of his son Thomas Allen and help from the transfer portal have all made a difference.

Even so, the unit still has a habit Dabo Swinney wants cleaned up after a recent game against Florida State, where the back end let a few situations get away from it. Swinney pointed to situational awareness and execution errors, the kind of mistakes that can undo otherwise solid coverage and keep Clemson from fully trusting how far the secondary has really come.
