In Scottsdale, Arizona, Héctor Rodríguez is making waves for the Reds, proving that even the less-publicized trades can yield big results. Rodríguez, Cincinnati's No. 6 prospect, showcased his potential in a commanding 10-1 Spring Breakout victory over the Giants.
Batting second, the 21-year-old launched a two-run homer to right-center, setting the tone early. By the end of the night, Rodríguez went 2-for-3, adding a two-run single and totaling four RBIs.
Reflecting on his performance, Rodríguez shared through interpreter Peterson Plaz, “I’ve been working a lot. It meant a lot to me, even if it's just one game. But I’m just trying to help the team to win.”
Acquired from the Mets in a trade for Tyler Naquin and Phillip Diehl back in 2022, Rodríguez has steadily climbed the ranks. His impressive stats at Double-A Chattanooga and Triple-A Louisville-batting .283 with a .786 OPS, 19 homers, and 65 RBIs-caught attention. Adding to his résumé, his stint in Dominican winter ball only solidified his reputation as a hitter who can let the ball fly.
Chattanooga manager Jose Moreno praised Rodríguez, saying, “There’s no doubt that Hector can hit. Those two runs in the first inning set the tone. Hopefully, he can carry it into the season.”
Now on the Reds' 40-man roster, Rodríguez is eyeing a Major League promotion. “I’m very happy to be on the 40-man roster.
Hopefully, the Reds give me a shot. That’s my goal for this year," he expressed.
“Keep working hard. I’m just going to show the team I can play in the big leagues for sure.”
On the mound, Chase Petty delivered a standout performance. The Reds' No. 9 prospect, eager to return to the majors after a challenging debut, pitched four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out six.
Petty, who threw 40 pitches with precision, emphasized the importance of staying calm under the spotlight. “We’re under the lights, you know we’re going to get a big crowd, you know there’s going to be scouts behind home plate,” Petty said.
“Staying intentful with every single pitch and staying through my routine on every single pitch. I’m taking steps in the right direction for sure.”
Despite a rocky start in the majors last season, Petty is focused on showing his growth. “This is a lot," he noted.
"It was really everything for me just working on my breaking balls, executing, getting ahead early. As long as I can keep doing that, keep getting ahead and execute with two strikes, I’m going to be great.”
Both Rodríguez and Petty are proving that the Reds' future is bright, with each game offering a glimpse of their potential to impact the big leagues.
