Cincinnati’s Alfredo Duno is back on the field, and the Reds sound encouraged by what they’ve seen after his stint on the Injured List.
Duno exited a game early on July 29 after trying to beat out an infield hit, then spent time in Arizona rehabbing a hamstring issue. That absence ended when he returned to the Chattanooga lineup on August 26, and Reds Director of Player Development Jeremy Farrell said the top prospect came back looking ready to roll.
“He worked really hard in Arizona to take care of the lower-body injury he had," Farrell told MLB.com's Mark Sheldon. "I saw him last weekend, and he looked physically strong, in good shape, and he came back with a ton of energy -- not only at the plate but also behind the plate. He’s in a good spot right now.”
Farrell also pointed to Duno’s offensive progress, especially the parts of his game that have carried him through the lower levels.
"He’s continued to improve upon some of the offensive strengths he’s shown so far through the A-ball levels," continued Farrell, "Controlling the strike zone, continuing to take his walks, and he’s cut down some of the strikeouts in Double-A, even while facing better competition.”
The early returns have been strong. Since rejoining Chattanooga, Duno has hit .423 with two doubles and four RBIs in seven games.
Duno’s 2025 season also included a stint in the Arizona Fall League, where he made the Arizona Fall Stars Game and grabbed plenty of attention with a three-home-run performance in the AFL semifinal game. That outing earned him Player of the Week honors, and he did it all at 19 years old.
Looking ahead, Farrell said the Reds will take a different approach with Duno in 2026.
".....from a player development perspective, he continues to work on his craft, and he’s showing signs of improvement day over day, week over week, month over month," Farrell said. “We’ll send him into the off-season with a plan to continue to work off the field but also try to integrate some of those things on the field if he does play winter ball.”
That winter-ball possibility could mean more reps in his home country of Venezuela, giving Duno another chance to keep building. His path to the majors is still unfolding, but the Reds appear to like where he stands right now, and he could be part of Cincinnati’s big-league picture in 2027.
