The Boston Red Sox made waves this offseason with some significant signings, notably bringing in former Philadelphia Phillies All-Star pitcher Ranger Suarez on a five-year, $130 million deal. Suarez is poised to join forces with Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet and former Reds' standout Sonny Gray, forming a formidable trio at the top of Boston's rotation.
However, Reds fans won't see Suarez take the mound during the opening weekend. As reported by Boston insider Chris Cotillo, Suarez will start the season as the Red Sox's No. 5 starter. His involvement in the World Baseball Classic with Team Venezuela has put him slightly behind his fellow starters in terms of preparation.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora confirmed that Suarez's position as the fifth starter is due to his current buildup status. With strategic off days, Boston can adjust their rotation, but Suarez won't be facing Cincinnati right away.
This development is a welcome relief for the Reds, who have historically struggled against left-handed pitchers. Instead of facing Suarez, Cincinnati will likely contend with right-hander Brayan Bello.
The Reds' lineup has had its share of difficulties against lefties, hitting just .229/.300/.353 last season. Only three teams fared worse in slugging percentage against southpaws in 2025.
This isn't a new issue for Cincinnati; in 2024, their performance against left-handers was even more dismal, with a .226/.284/.326 slash line. It was back in 2023 when the Reds had some success, posting a .258/.332/.418 against left-handed pitching.
This spring, the Reds have shown some improvement, batting .258/.332/.484 against lefties, while leading the league in home runs and RBIs. However, spring training stats can be misleading when predicting regular-season performance.
Matt McLain has been a bright spot, excelling against both lefties and righties, with an impressive .474 batting average and 1.474 OPS against southpaws this spring. On the flip side, TJ Friedl, typically stronger against right-handers, has struggled with a .133/.235/.133 line against lefties in Cactus League action.
Expect Reds manager Terry Francona to field a lineup heavy with right-handed hitters against the Red Sox's Opening Day starter, Crochet. Yet, players like Will Benson and Nathaniel Lowe should see action over the weekend, especially with right-handers Gray and Bello slated to pitch.
