Reds Slugger Gets Last Chance Position Switch

Experiment at third base offers Christian Encarnacion-Strand a potential lifeline to revive his major league career with the Reds.

Christian Encarnacion-Strand was once a promising prospect in the Cincinnati Reds organization, showcasing the kind of talent that had fans buzzing. Yet, the transition to the big leagues hasn't gone as planned, and he's found himself in a holding pattern at Triple-A, serving as roster depth should the Reds need an injury replacement.

The path back to Cincinnati is crowded, especially at first base, where Sal Stewart has staked his claim. With Spencer Steer and Nathaniel Lowe also in the mix, Encarnacion-Strand's options seem limited.

That's likely why the Reds are experimenting with him at third base to kick off the season in the minors. He started at the hot corner for the Louisville Bats' opener and took on the designated hitter role the following day.

While Encarnacion-Strand may not have dazzled defensively in the majors, he's shown he can hold his own at both first and third base. At 26, he still has the athleticism needed to adapt back to third base.

If he can showcase some defensive prowess in Triple-A, another opportunity in Cincinnati might not be far-fetched. Ke'Bryan Hayes, the Reds' current third baseman, is known for his defensive skills but has struggled at the plate and dealt with back issues.

Eugenio Suárez is the likely first choice to step in if Hayes falters, but Encarnacion-Strand could make a case for himself with a strong showing.

However, the real hurdle for Encarnacion-Strand is his performance at the plate. His spring training was underwhelming, marred by frequent strikeouts and a lack of walks.

His career 4.2% walk rate highlights his struggle to get on base, a critical area for improvement. Historically, he's excelled against Triple-A pitching, boasting a .928 OPS, so the Reds might benefit from letting him regain confidence and refine his skills at this level.

Even if the Reds don't find a spot for him, a standout first half in the minors could catch the eye of other teams as the trade deadline approaches. While the odds might seem long, there's still a chance for Encarnacion-Strand to reignite his career and make an impact, whether in Cincinnati or elsewhere.
