Sal Stewart has been a name to watch for the Cincinnati Reds, making waves with his big-league debut last year. Kicking off this season with a standout 3-for-4 performance on Opening Day, Stewart showed resilience by playing through what appeared to be a nasty injury. Thankfully, it wasn't as severe as it looked.
After a brief stint with the Reds in 2025, Stewart is poised to become a key player in Cincinnati's lineup. The team’s management clearly sees a bright future for the young slugger, and it’s time they back that vision with a long-term contract.
Historically, the Reds have been hesitant with long-term deals. While Hunter Greene secured a six-year extension in 2023 and Jose Trevino inked a two-year deal last spring, many of their promising young talents remain without extended contracts. This strategy needs a rethink.
Stewart is the kind of player who can lead a new era for the Reds. His infectious energy lights up both the clubhouse and the field, and his performance at the plate is nothing short of electric.
Last season, Stewart hit .309/.383/.524, with 20 home runs and 80 RBIs across 118 minor league games. His 152 wRC+ highlights his consistent offensive prowess. Simply put, wherever Stewart goes, he delivers at the plate.
A fitting comparison can be made with Baltimore Orioles' catcher Samuel Basallo. Basallo, known for his batting skills, posted similar numbers last season with a .270/.377/.589 line, 23 homers, and 67 RBIs. The Orioles smartly locked him into an eight-year, $67 million contract, with escalators that could bring it up to $88.5 million.
This type of deal would suit Stewart perfectly. Like Basallo, Stewart is more renowned for his bat and is just 22 years old. A similar contract would allow him to reach free agency before turning 30, offering both security and opportunity.
Some might argue that Stewart hasn’t yet earned such a lucrative deal. While that may be true, the Reds aren’t in a position to wait until a player’s market value skyrockets. They need to trust their scouts, trust what they see in Stewart, and invest in his potential now.
The Reds have already missed opportunities with players like Elly De La Cruz and Matt McLain. They can’t afford to let Stewart slip through their fingers.
Offering him a compelling contract now could prevent future regret and solidify a cornerstone for their lineup. If they hesitate, the opportunity might just pass them by.
