Reds Just Created A Lineup Question Terry Francona Has To Solve

In a surprising shakeup, the Cincinnati Reds adjust their roster by sending struggling prospect Noelvi Marte to Triple-A while promoting a rising catcher amid lineup uncertainties.

The Reds made a head-turning move Tuesday afternoon, optioning outfielder Noelvi Marte to Triple-A Louisville and bringing up catcher Will Banfield ahead of their game against the Cardinals.

Marte’s season has gone off track in a major way. In 63 games, he’s hit just .189/.229/.321 with 13 extra-base hits, a sharp fall from last year’s .263/.300/.448 line that came with 33 extra-base hits and 10 stolen bases. The production dip has been jarring for a player who was once viewed as one of the sport’s top young talents.

Marte, now 24, was the key return piece in the deal that sent Luis Castillo to the Seattle Mariners. He was once ranked No. 29 among Major League Baseball prospects, and while he has flashed some ability, the bigger issue has been consistency. The chase rate tells the story: he’s expanding the zone almost 41% of the time, while pitchers are challenging him with strikes only 44% of the time.

Banfield, meanwhile, has earned his shot after a strong run at Triple-A Louisville. He’s improved from last season’s .214/.270/.292 line over 79 games to .262/.306/.426 this year, with 33 extra-base hits. The catcher also appeared in seven games for the Reds in 2025.

What makes the move stand out is that Cincinnati did not announce a corresponding roster move involving Tyler Stephenson or Jose Trevino. That leaves the Reds carrying three catchers, which raises the possibility that Stephenson could see more time at designated hitter. He has been Cincinnati’s best hitter since the All-Star break, and the club would clearly welcome more of his bat in the lineup.

There’s also the question of whether Stephenson or Trevino is dealing with something. Terry Francona’s explanation should be worth watching when the Reds take on the Cardinals on Tuesday night. The series is tied 1-1, and left-hander Andrew Abbott is scheduled to start for Cincinnati.

Reds Make A Noelvi Marte Move With Tyler Stephenson In Mind

Tyler Stephensons workload behind the plate has become part of the Reds daily equation, and the club has started reshaping the roster with that in mind. Cincinnati has been leaning on Stephenson heavily this season, and his recent comments about the physical demands of catching underscore why depth matters as the grind wears on.

Will Banfield is the latest piece to join the mix, giving the Reds another catcher on the active roster after being added to the 40-man roster earlier this season. He has spent this year in Louisville, where he played 79 games, while the club also made a separate move involving Noelvi Marte after a difficult season at the plate. [Read more 🡒]

Reds Rotation Trouble Just Opened A Familiar Reunion Possibility

The Reds are staring at a rotation problem that has become hard to ignore, with injuries and limited starter availability thinning out the staff as they try to get through the 2026 season. In that kind of scramble, familiar names tend to resurface, and Michael Lorenzen is one of them. He left Cincinnati in 2022, but he has since bounced around the league and shown he can fill more than one role on a pitching staff.

Lorenzens appeal is obvious for a club looking for innings anywhere it can find them. He has worked as both a starter and a reliever, which gives the Reds some flexibility if they decide to explore a reunion. The question now is whether Cincinnati sees him as the kind of stabilizing option it needs right away, or simply another possibility in a rotation search that is only getting more complicated.
