Rangers Cut Former Reds Reliever, Sparking New Talk in Cincinnati

Despite initial criticism, the Reds' decision to trade Alexis Diaz appears justified as the reliever struggles to find consistent form with new teams.

The Cincinnati Reds made waves last spring by trading former closer Alexis Diaz to the Los Angeles Dodgers for minor league pitcher Mike Villani. At the time, critics were quick to question the Reds' decision to part ways with a promising young reliever who had been an All-Star less than two years prior.

Fast forward, and it seems the Reds' gamble paid off. Diaz, who signed with the Texas Rangers in the offseason, has now been designated for assignment by Texas. This marks his fifth organization in under a year, highlighting the unpredictable nature of baseball careers.

Diaz's struggles with the Rangers were evident this spring. In just three Cactus League outings, he allowed eight runs on three hits.

The culprit? Control issues.

Over 1⅔ innings, Diaz walked four batters and hit another, a pattern reminiscent of his later days in Cincinnati.

Back in 2023, Diaz was a powerhouse for the Reds. After a solid rookie season in 2022, he took over the closer role and was lights out, earning an All-Star nod. By the break, he had 41 appearances, 26 saves, 61 strikeouts, and a stunning 2.03 ERA.

However, the second half of 2023 saw a decline. Diaz's ERA ballooned to 4.61 over 27⅓ innings, raising concerns. The following year, despite 28 saves, his ERA rose to 3.99, leaving fans puzzled about their former star.

Last season was a tough one for Diaz. Starting on the injured list, he managed only six games before being sent to the minors.

A trade to the Dodgers in May saw him make his LA debut in July, but after nine games, he was released. The Braves picked him up, and he made three more appearances to finish the season.

Diaz's journey underscores the volatility of a reliever's career. Whether it's mechanical issues, injuries, or mental hurdles, Diaz faces a challenging road back to the majors.
