In a day full of ups and downs for the Cincinnati Reds, second baseman Matt McLain was a bright spot. After a rare hitless outing, McLain bounced back in style, going 3-for-3. Despite his stellar performance, the Reds couldn't seal the deal in either of their split squad games in the Cactus League on Wednesday.
In Goodyear, Arizona, McLain's efforts came during a tough 8-6 loss to the Colorado Rockies. His spring training stats are turning heads with a slash line of .545/.592/1.045, showing he's in midseason form already.
Brady Singer took the mound for the Reds, delivering 3 2/3 scoreless innings before a blister forced him out. The Reds seemed in control with a 6-1 lead by the eighth inning, but the Rockies stormed back, capitalizing on some costly errors to score six runs, four of which were unearned.
Meanwhile, over in Tempe, Arizona, the Reds faced the Los Angeles Angels and fell 7-4. Chase Burns started for the Reds, allowing two earned runs over his two innings of work. Despite the loss, the Reds showcased some power at the plate, launching three solo homers courtesy of Sal Stewart, Rece Hinds, and JJ Bleday.
As spring training continues, the Reds will be looking to tighten up their defense and maintain their offensive momentum, with McLain's performance providing a promising glimpse of what could be a breakout season.
