Cincinnati Reds Stun Fans With Bold Lineup Choice for Spring Opener

Reds' spring training kicks off with an intriguing lineup twist, as rookie Sal Stewart takes an unexpected role against the Guardians.

The Cincinnati Reds are gearing up for their Cactus League opener against the Cleveland Guardians, a matchup that always sparks interest given the in-state rivalry. With Terry Francona stepping into his second season as manager, there's a palpable buzz around the Reds' camp. Francona is eager to showcase a team ready to make waves in 2026.

In an intriguing move, Francona has decided to start rookie infielder Sal Stewart at second base for the opener. While many fans might have expected Stewart to take his place at first, this switch adds an element of surprise to the lineup. Francona hinted at this possibility earlier, but seeing it unfold so soon is unexpected for many.

This doesn't mean Matt McLain is being sidelined, but it's clear the Reds are exploring their options. McLain struggled last season, and this adjustment could be a strategic backup plan if he doesn't bounce back to his 2023 form.

Joining Stewart in the lineup, Tyler Stephenson will be behind the plate, Eugenio Suárez is set at third, and Will Benson will cover left field. Stewart is slotted to bat cleanup, with Noelvi Marte, Nathaniel Lowe, and Dane Myers following. Non-roster invitee Michael Toglia will take on the DH role, while Edwin Arroyo fills in for Elly De La Cruz at shortstop.

On the mound, last year's standout rookie Chase Burns will start. Burns, who made an impressive big-league debut, is in the mix for a spot in the Reds' rotation.

He'll be competing with Rhett Lowder, Brandon Williamson, and Julian Aguiar. While Williamson will sit this one out, Lowder and Aguiar are expected to pitch after Burns.

Hagen Danner, Darren McCaughan, and Anthony Misisewicz are also lined up to face the Guardians.

The Guardians will counter with left-hander Logan Allen. Last season, Allen posted an 8-11 record with a 4.25 ERA over 156 innings.
