Cincinnati Reds Roster Moves Hint at Exciting Opening Day Lineup

Reds' Opening Day roster takes shape as key decisions and player cuts set the stage for an anticipated season.

As the Cincinnati Reds gear up for the 2026 Opening Day, they've made some decisive roster moves that give us a clearer picture of who will take the field next Thursday. The team has reassigned catcher Will Banfield, outfielders JJ Bleday and Rece Hinds, and right-handed pitcher Zach Maxwell to the minors. This signals that left-handed pitcher Sam Moll is likely to secure the final reliever spot, while former Gold Glove winner Nathaniel Lowe is expected to have his contract selected soon.

The Reds made headlines earlier this week by announcing that Brandon Williamson, Rhett Lowder, and Chase Burns will be part of the Opening Day roster. Although manager Terry Francona hasn't officially labeled it a six-man rotation, the active roster will indeed feature six starting pitchers.

Andrew Abbott is set to take the mound as the Opening Day starter, followed by Nick Lodolo and Brady Singer. The bullpen will be stacked with Moll, Emilio Pagán, Tony Santillan, Connor Phillips, Pierce Johnson, Graham Ashcraft, and Brock Burke, ready to back up the starters.

On the offensive side, Tyler Stephenson and Jose Trevino will handle the catching duties. Lowe is expected to join rookie Sal Stewart at first base, with Matt McLain, Eugenio Suárez, Ke'Bryan Hayes, and Elly De La Cruz completing the infield lineup.

Lowe's addition to the 40-man roster is imminent, especially since he had an opt-out clause in his minor-league contract. To make room, the Reds are likely to place Hunter Greene on the 60-day injured list following his recent elbow surgery, which will sideline him until July.

With Bleday and Hinds sent to the minors, the Reds' outfield will feature TJ Friedl, Dane Myers, Spencer Steer, Noelvi Marte, and Will Benson. Bleday and Hinds had a strong spring showing, and they’ll be ready to step up if needed due to injuries or other roster changes.

As Opening Day approaches, the Reds will keep an eye on potential player releases from other teams, which could offer opportunities to bolster their roster with experienced talent. With these strategic decisions, Cincinnati is setting the stage for an exciting start to the season.
