The Cincinnati Reds have made some significant roster adjustments, with Christian Encarnacion-Strand being one of the notable players impacted. Once a promising power hitter, Encarnacion-Strand's journey has been bumpy since his major league debut in 2023. Now, with his reassignment to Minor League camp, questions linger about his future in the big leagues.
Both Encarnacion-Strand and Chase Petty have been optioned to Triple-A Louisville, joining Minor League camp. Catcher Michael Trautwein, not on the Reds' 40-man roster, also heads to Minor League camp. This leaves the Reds' big-league spring roster at 42 players.
Encarnacion-Strand made a splash in 2023, quickly becoming a fan favorite with his 13 home runs and a solid .270/.328/.477 slash line over 62 games. However, 2024 was less forgiving. A slow start and a hand injury led to a stint on the 60-day IL, where he ended the season with a .513 OPS.
Anticipation was high for a comeback in 2025, but injuries struck again. Starting as the Reds' Opening Day first baseman, Encarnacion-Strand was sidelined after 15 games with a lower back injury. Despite returning in early June, he played only 21 more games before being sent down to Triple-A, posting a .247/.273/.438 slash line.
With Sal Stewart emerging as the Reds' first baseman of the future, Encarnacion-Strand's chances of making the 2026 Opening Day roster were slim. The Reds' depth at the position includes Spencer Steer, Eugenio Suárez, and non-roster invitee Nathaniel Lowe, making competition fierce.
Meanwhile, Chase Petty is turning heads in Cactus League play. Expected to start the year in Triple-A Louisville, the right-hander has impressed by keeping opposing teams scoreless over four innings in two appearances.
Both Encarnacion-Strand and Petty remain valuable assets within the Reds' organization, ready for a call-up when needed. However, given the team's depth at first base, fans might see Petty back in the majors before Encarnacion-Strand.
