As the Cincinnati Reds navigate the setback of Hunter Greene's injury, the spotlight shifts to Chase Burns, a promising pitcher eager to seize the opportunity. With the Reds adjusting their pitching rotation, Burns emerges as a compelling option, and the team is handling his spring training workload with care. The latest reports are encouraging.
Charlie Goldsmith notes that Cincinnati is "very pleased" with Burns' recent performances. "Chase Burns threw a bullpen yesterday that went very well. They’re very pleased with how he looks right now," Goldsmith shared on social media.
Burns faced some concerns after being pulled early from a spring training game on March 13. However, manager Terry Francona quickly dispelled any worries.
“This kid's still working through some of his routines,” Francona explained. “He had a big five days with the trainers, focusing on flexibility and mobility.
We just want to make sure he’s good to go. It might cost him an inning, but he's OK.”
The Reds clearly view Burns as a starter, impressed by his potential. At 23, he's looking to build on last season's numbers, where he posted a 4.57 ERA with 67 strikeouts over 41.1 innings, despite a 0-3 record.
Whether Greene's absence paves the way for Burns to make his debut this season remains uncertain, but his focus is unwavering. “Just keep working on my craft,” Burns emphasized. “I’m focusing on my body, my mobility, and refining the pitches that complement my fastball and slider.”
As the Reds prepare for Opening Day on Thursday, March 26, against the Boston Red Sox, all eyes will be on how Burns fits into the team's plans.
