The Browns have finally put some structure around their quarterback plan, at least for the first two preseason games.
After weeks of speculation, Cleveland coach Todd Monken said Deshaun Watson will start Saturday against the Chicago Bears and play the first half. Shedeur Sanders will come in for the third quarter. Next week against the Buffalo Bills, the roles will flip.
Monken had already made it clear both quarterbacks would get at least one preseason start, so this doesn’t automatically hand Watson the job. Still, the way things are lining up makes it hard to ignore who’s in front.
The team announced the decision on August 12, 2026, after Monken said he settled on the plan early Wednesday and would let the players know after practice before making it public. The news came on a strong day for the offense in camp, with both quarterbacks leading scoring drives.
Monken also said the Browns want to get their other starters on the field as long as they don’t have injury designations or medical issues. Pass protection is part of that evaluation, too, and it could influence how long the quarterbacks stay in the game.
“We’re gonna see both of them. One is gonna start this week and one will start next week. They will play about a half and I’d like to see them get a two-minute (situation), ” Monken said, via Zac Jackson.
Watson’s camp has had its ups and downs. He started slowly, then looked more settled in the second week as his reps increased. His best day came when he went 17-for-20 with seven touchdowns and no interceptions.
Even so, the turnover issue hasn’t disappeared. Watson threw nine interceptions in the first 12 days of training camp, a problem that still hangs over the competition.
Sanders has made his own progress. Reports from camp say his footwork has improved and he’s done a better job of throwing the ball away instead of taking losses.
He’s protected the ball well overall, but he has also dodged a few would-be sacks and needs to speed up his release. His cadence remains another area to clean up.
The Browns haven’t closed the door on the battle, but the direction is pretty clear for now. Watson appears to be holding the edge, and these first two preseason games will be the next big checkpoint.

Hunter Greenes latest turn in the medical room leaves the Reds with another major rotation question just as they were trying to build around one of the most electric arms in the organization. Greene had given Cincinnati a real foundation, posting a 2.76 ERA over 45 starts from 2024-25, but elbow problems already cut into his 2026 season and slowed the momentum he had built as a front-line starter.
Now the concern is longer term, and much more serious.
