Jerry Stovall, one of LSU’s most accomplished all-around players and later the Tigers’ head coach, has died at 85, according to multiple reports Monday, Aug. 31.
A West Monroe, La., native, Stovall built his LSU legacy over three seasons from 1960-62 by doing just about everything. He lined up at halfback and defensive back, handled return duties and even punted, becoming one of the most versatile players in school history.
His senior year in 1962 was the peak of that run. Stovall was a unanimous All-American, won SEC Most Valuable Player honors and finished second in Heisman Trophy voting behind Oregon State quarterback Terry Baker.
He also helped LSU win the SEC championship in 1961 and closed his college career with more than 1,000 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns, plus 452 receiving yards and a touchdown. On defense, he picked off seven passes, and he averaged 42.1 yards per punt in 1962.
LSU retired Stovall’s No. 21 in 2018, placing it among the school’s select honored football jerseys. He was already enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame as part of the 2010 class and had gone into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 1981.
“Mr. Everything” left an unforgettable legacy at LSU as a consensus All-American, Heisman Trophy runner-up, 3x All-SEC selection and head coach.

The St. Louis Cardinals made Stovall the No. 2 overall pick in the 1963 NFL Draft, and he shifted to the secondary as a pro. He spent nine seasons with the Cardinals, collecting three Pro Bowl nods and All-Pro recognition.
Stovall’s football life eventually came full circle back in Baton Rouge. After his playing career, he got into coaching and later returned to LSU as an assistant under longtime coach Charles McClendon. When Bo Rein died in a plane crash before the 1980 season, Stovall was tapped to take over his alma mater.
He led LSU for three seasons and finished 22-21-2. The high point came in 1982, when the Tigers went 8-3-1, knocked off several ranked teams and reached the Orange Bowl.

13 LSU to finish off a 12-1 season.
Stovall earned Walter Camp Football Foundation Coach of the Year honors, then moved into athletics administration. He became Louisiana Tech’s athletic director in 1990.
Later, he returned to Baton Rouge and served as president and CEO of the Baton Rouge Area Sports Foundation, staying involved in Louisiana sports and civic life.
