Week 1 in Cincinnati belonged to the defense.
The Bengals came away with four takeaways in a 33-27 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and for the first time, it really feels like Joe Burrow has a defense that can help him chase the AFC’s best. The new faces wasted no time making an impact, either. Jonathan Allen and Dexter Lawrence controlled the middle, while Bryan Cook and Boye Mafe each forced fumbles.
Now comes the harder part: backing it up. Cincinnati heads south to face the Houston Texans on Sunday, and the standard set in the opener is a high one.
For a lot of Bengals fans, this offseason already looked like Duke Tobin’s best work in Cincinnati. The front office brought in veteran help, traded for Dexter Lawrence, and used a second-round pick on Cashius Howell, who already looks like a steal.
Former Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis made it clear he noticed the difference, and he didn’t waste time pointing the praise in the right direction. After the win over Tampa Bay, Lewis said he saw a different attitude from the defense and singled out Tobin for the overhaul.

That kind of reaction says plenty. Cincinnati’s defensive upgrades had fans buzzing all offseason, but now there’s actual production behind the hype. And after seeing that group make a quality Buccaneers offense look shaky, the excitement around this unit feels a lot more real.
