Josh Johnson made the most of his Saturday work, and the Bengals’ third-string quarterback had plenty to like after Cincinnati’s 27-9 win over the Bears.
Johnson threw for 156 yards and two touchdowns, connecting once with Colbie Young and once with Tanner Hudson. A big part of the story, though, was the way he leaned on a pair of young receivers early. Dohnte Meyers and Young combined for eight catches, 89 yards and the touchdown on 14 targets, giving Johnson a chance to talk about a group he believes is trending in the right direction.
“They just keep making plays, and now they're starting to be consistent in their habits,” Johnson said. “Lining up right, being in the right spots, being on time, And your trust just continues to grow because you know they're gonna do what they're supposed to do, and the rest is up to them, man.
God blessed them with a lot of heart. He blessed those guys with a lot of ability, and they're going out there, and they're showing it.”
Young, meanwhile, sounded eager but grounded after finding the end zone. He described the approach in simple terms and credited Johnson for putting the ball where it needed to be.
“Just keep stacking days; never, get too ahead of yourself. Stay level-headed and keep growing,” Young said about the outing before touching on his touchdown with ESPN 1530's Tony Pike.
“Yeah. When you win at the line, it makes it easier at the top of the catch to finish.
I mean it was a great play by Josh right there, just putting it right in the bread basket. It made it easy for me.”
Johnson also said he’s seeing encouraging signs from the team as preseason winds down, with Cincinnati now heading into its final week of exhibition play.
He’s likely to get another heavy workload Friday against Philadelphia after Joe Burrow handled major work against the Bears on Thursday. Joe Flacco, meanwhile, has his backup role settled after what he did in relief of Burrow last season.
“Yeah, we headed in the right direction,” Johnson concluded. “I understand it's a long season, and I understand the process is about what you do every day.
And what we're doing right now is we're focused on the moment, and we're checking the boxes in the moment. And with every team I've been around that does that, over time it works out in your favor.
I think we just have to stay in the moment and keep taking it one day at a time.”
Cincinnati will try to finish the preseason undefeated next Friday in Philadelphia.
