Ja'Marr Chase Sent A Clear Message Before Bengals-Ravens showdown

Despite winning his appeal, Cincinnati's Ja'Marr Chase won't be bringing his signature celebration to the field, as he focuses on overcoming early season hurdles ahead of the crucial clash with Baltimore.

Ja’Marr Chase is moving on from the celebration drama and turning his attention to Baltimore.

The Bengals star spoke with reporters Thursday for the first time in a few weeks, and while his appeal over the NFL’s celebration fine was successful, Chase made it clear the move in question is probably finished for good. He said there’s no real plan to bring back the “people’s elbow,” even with the league agreeing with his side of the argument.

"If we could do the celly, we would bring it back, but I don't think they're gonna let us," Chase said. "You know what I'm saying?

So it's too many opinions on the celebration, so they're probably just gonna dead it. But I'm just happy that I got a chance to get the opportunity to win my money back."

The league fined Tee Higgins four times and Chase twice after their celebration in September’s game against Houston. The total bill came to $89,556 for the arm signage.

For Chase, that’s in the rearview. What matters now is getting his receiving production rolling after a quiet start by his standards. He has 289 receiving yards through five games and said the lack of a 100-yard outing is part of why his numbers are still down.

"Started off pretty slow, first game. Haven't had a 100-yard game yet.

I think that's a really big key on why I'm so low," Chase noted. "But I'm getting good opportunities.

Defense is changing looks, and there hasn't been too many downfield passes for me to make the 100 yards, but they're still using me a good way."

Sunday brings another shot at Baltimore, a team Chase has not faced in the Baltimore sun since 2021. That day still stands out for a different reason: he was late for a team activity that week, but still put together a huge performance with eight catches for 201 yards and a touchdown.

"I got fined for damn near missing a whole meeting that week that year," Chase said. "So I actually had to play good.

I came late to a morning practice, and yeah, I think it was a Friday or Saturday I came late and then after the game, after we won, they (the coaches) was like, 'If you doing stuff like that, you come late every time.' So that's a good little part."

Chase has clearly cleaned up his timing since then. He’ll line up against the Ravens secondary Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.

Bengals Could Be Rethinking Two Key Roles Before Ravens Game

Kyle Duggers return to full availability gives Cincinnati another variable to sort through as it prepares for Baltimore. Dugger had been limited by a quad injury and showed up on the injury report earlier in the week, but he is no longer listed on the final report, which puts him back in position to contribute after playing only limited snaps this season.

The timing matters because the Bengals are already weighing how to distribute snaps in the secondary and in the backfield. Jordan Battles struggles have opened the door for more consideration of Dugger, while Bryan Cook is healthy again, and there is also some thought of giving Samaje Perine a larger offensive role with Chase Browns recent performance in view. Ja'Marr Chase Could Force A Ravens Decision They Didn't Want

JaMarr Chase has already given Baltimore plenty of reasons to think twice about how it wants to defend him. Against the Ravens secondary, the Bengals wideout has piled up 61 catches for 1,036 yards and seven touchdowns in his career, production that puts real pressure on a defense trying to limit explosive plays while still accounting for Cincinnatis passing game.

Marlon Humphrey has made clear he knows how difficult that assignment can be, and the Ravens may need to look elsewhere if they want a different look on Chase. With Joe Burrow stressing how hard it is to win contested throws against Baltimore, the matchup could force the Ravens into a decision they would rather not have to make, one that might send coverage toward Nate Wiggins or Chidobe Awuzie instead. Bengals Get A Huge Ravens Twist At The Worst Possible Time

A new wrinkle landed in the Bengals AFC North race this week, and it comes at a time when every divisional game feels loaded. Cincinnati is getting ready for its upcoming meeting with Baltimore with an eye on climbing the standings, and the Ravens will be forced to adjust their offensive plan after a late change at quarterback.

Baltimore announced it will be without Lamar Jackson because of an ankle injury, leaving Tyler Huntley to step in under center. For the Bengals, the matchup now shifts in a hurry, with the focus turning to how they handle a Ravens team that looks different than the one they expected to see when the schedule first circled this game.
