DJ Turner II Reclaims Bengals Starting Role After Setbacks

DJ Turner II's journey from being a second-round draft pick to reclaiming his starting position with the Bengals showcases resilience and determination in the face of challenges.

When the Cincinnati Bengals picked DJ Turner in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, they weren't just filling a roster spot-they were betting on a future star. With Cam Taylor-Britt showing flashes of brilliance, and veterans like Chidobe Awuzie and first-rounder Dax Hill in the mix, Turner had his work cut out for him.

Despite the competition, Turner started 12 games in his rookie year and emerged as a top-tier cornerback this past season, snagging his first two career interceptions and defending an impressive 18 passes.

In a recent chat with NFL Insider Ari Meirov, Turner reflected on his stellar 2025 season. But it wasn't all smooth sailing from the start.

Before the 2025 opener against the Browns, head coach Zac Taylor informed Turner that he wouldn't be starting outside. Rather than dwelling on the setback, Turner confidently assured Taylor he would reclaim his spot.

And he did just that.

“When I got called in there, I got benched, and I appreciate coach Zac doing this…you know, a lot of times, you get benched, it is what it is, but he wanted to call me in. He wanted to talk to me,” Turner shared. “So he called me in and was like, ‘I just want to tell you, we decided to go with somebody else the first week.’”

The Bengals narrowly won the first 2025 “Battle of Ohio” 17-16, with Turner making a crucial interception against Joe Flacco, who ironically joined the Bengals soon after. Turner’s determination paid off, and he told Taylor, “I’m going to get it back, and when I do, I’m not coming off the field.”

Though the Bengals' regular season performance might have kept Turner from more Pro Bowl recognition, his persistence paid off as he claimed the starting role from Taylor-Britt, who faced challenges both on and off the field.

Now, Turner and Hill are key figures in the Bengals' plans for the future. The team is considering investing in another high draft pick for the position, but the focus remains on securing long-term deals for these standout defensive backs.

Turner also discussed his commitment to meditation for recovery, his partnership with Hill, and more in his interview with Meirov. Keep an eye on these Bengals-they’re building something special.
