Bryan Cook Gives Bengals A Needed Boost Before A Huge Test

Deck: Bryan Cook aims to boost the Bengals' defense against the Ravens as he returns to full form, ready to tackle Lamar Jackson and his formidable offense.

The Bengals are set to get Bryan Cook back at full strength at a time when they need him most.

After dealing with an ankle injury that left him in and out of the lineup in the Week 3 loss to the Steelers and then sidelined him the following week against the Jaguars, the veteran safety is ready for Sunday’s matchup with the Ravens. Cincinnati dropped both of those games, and even when Cook returned for the Week 5 win at Miami, he wasn’t able to make much of an impact in the 31-24 victory.

Now, with the bye week behind him, Cook says he’s looking forward to getting back into the mix.

“I’m excited to really go. You don’t know how well you feel until you really push yourself.

It’s like life. When you hit those extremes, you’re alive.”

Cook also understands exactly what’s coming if Lamar Jackson is back on the field, and he knows the challenge of trying to slow Baltimore’s attack.

“You have to try to contain Lamar,” Cook said. “He’s a force to be reckoned with.

He’s one of the best dual-threats if not the best dual threat of this generation. He’s very explosive.

He has a tank in the backfield with 22 (Henry). You try to contain those two.

They have a high-powered offense. We have to slow them down, capitalize on missed opportunities, get a turnover, and be physical.

It’s the AFC North.”

That kind of voice matters for a Bengals defense that has had its rough patches this season. Getting Cook healthy again gives the safeties room a boost and adds a veteran presence on the back end heading into a game against one of the league’s most dangerous offenses when everything is humming.

Bengals Safety Problems Keep Reviving One Painful Reunion Idea

The Bengals have spent plenty of time trying to patch the hole Jessie Bates left behind, and it is easy to understand why the topic keeps circling back. Cincinnati has tried to address safety through free agency and the draft, but the search has not exactly settled the defense, and Bryan Cooks injury only adds to the uncertainty around a position group that has been hard to stabilize since Bates moved on.

Bates remains the kind of player who naturally fuels reunion chatter because of how much he once meant to the Bengals secondary, but the road back is not simple. Even with the defensive issues still hanging over the roster, any move involving him would have to make sense for Cincinnati in terms of cost, and that is why this idea stays more of a lingering what-if than a likely solution. Derrick Henry Just Put Bengals Defensive Front Under The Spotlight

As Cincinnati gets ready for a pivotal AFC North meeting with Baltimore, Derrick Henrys comments have added a little extra heat to a matchup already defined by trench play. The Ravens back spent time talking up the Bengals defensive tackles, singling out Dexter Lawrence and Jonathan Allen for the kind of disruptive, physical presence that can change how an offense approaches the run game.

That respect only sharpens the pressure on Cincinnatis front, which has been vulnerable against the run even if opponents have not leaned on it heavily in volume. The Bengals have given up 5.0 yards per carry, a ranking that leaves them near the bottom of the league, and now they are staring at a division opponent with one of the NFLs most punishing runners waiting to test that weakness.
