The Bengals’ defense just took another hit, and it comes at a time when Cincinnati can’t really afford one.
Per ESPN, the team is placing rookie defensive lineman Cashius Howell on injured reserve after a wrist injury that required surgery. Howell, a second-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, went 41st overall and had become a useful piece up front before the setback.
“Howell, a rookie out of Texas A&M University, has played all in seven games this season and totaled six tackles with two TFLs and one sack,” the team announced.
That loss lands on a defense that has already been under pressure. The Bengals are 5-2, have won three straight, and are trying to keep pace with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC North.
Offensively, they’ve been rolling, putting up 206 points. But the other side of the ball has been a different story, with Cincinnati allowing 158 points so far this season.
The timing is especially tricky after Sunday’s wild 43-36 overtime win over the Tennessee Titans. Cincinnati needed Joe Burrow’s five touchdown passes to escape, and the defense gave up 440 total yards in the process.
The Bengals are trying to push toward the NFL Playoffs after missing them last season and finishing 6-11 in 2025. They reached the Super Bowl in the 2021 season, but the road since then has been uneven.
Next up is Atlanta on Sunday, and Cincinnati will have to keep moving without Howell in the mix.

JaMarr Chases Sideline Frustration Says A Lot About These Bengals
The Bengals have spent the last two games digging themselves into early holes and then finding a way out, which says plenty about where this group is right now. In the middle of it all, Ja'Marr Chase has been as visible as ever, not just making plays but showing the kind of edge that comes with a team that expects more of itself than a slow start and a comeback script.
Zac Taylor addressed Chases sideline frustration after the latest game, and it fit the broader picture around Cincinnati: this is an emotional team trying to keep its standard intact while it works through uneven stretches. Chases body language stood out because the Bengals know how much he cares, and because the last thing this locker room wants is to let those early lapses become a habit. [Read more 🡒]
Joe Flacco Just Weighed In On Caleb Williams Cleats Controversy
Joe Flacco has found himself in the middle of a cleats controversy far from Cincinnati, and he is not exactly staying neutral. The Bengals backup quarterback, who is also an investor in Caddix, stepped in after Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams drew an NFL fine for wearing unauthorized Caddix cleats. Flacco said the shoes are ones he has worn for years, adding another layer to a situation that has already spilled beyond the field and into the leagues enforcement of uniform rules.
Caddix has been publicly backing Williams as well, even putting up a billboard in Chicago to show support. With the brand now getting attention for the wrong kind of reason, Flaccos involvement gives the dispute a little more star power and a lot more visibility. The next question is how far he is willing to go if the league keeps pressing the issue. [Read more 🡒]
Zac Taylor Sent A Clear Message Before Bengals Head To Madrid
With the Bengals headed to Madrid for their Week 9 matchup against the Falcons, Zac Taylor made sure the message stayed centered on football. The Cincinnati coach framed the trip as a business assignment first and foremost, stressing that the focus is winning the game while any time for sightseeing will be limited.
Taylor also acknowledged that the off-field logistics will be a little less comfortable than the on-field ones. His Spanish is limited, so he said he will lean on translation help to get through the trip, another reminder that this international visit is as much about adapting to a new setting as it is about preparing for Atlanta.
