A young Bengals defender has surfaced as a name to watch with the trade deadline drawing closer.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported Wednesday that Shemar Stewart is a player “teams are tracking” ahead of the Nov. 10 deadline at 4 p.m. ET. Stewart, a 2025 first-round pick, has had an uneven start to his Bengals career, with injuries playing a part in both of his underwhelming seasons so far and no real foothold yet in the main defensive line rotation.
Fowler also noted former Bengals safety Jessie Bates III as another name worth monitoring.
“One surprise name a few teams are tracking is Cincinnati edge rusher Shemar Stewart,” Fowler wrote. “The 2025 first-round pick is not a factor in the team's rotation right now.
He has played 17 defensive snaps, well behind the total for the fourth defensive end, Cedric Johnson (83). And rookie second-rounder Cashius Howell has been impressive.
“Cincinnati typically doesn't move its young draft picks, but it would be surprising if the Bengals haven't received inquiries on Stewart, whose upside remains high. Also, could a team pry safety Jessie Bates III out of Atlanta?
He will be a free agent in 2027, and the Falcons are sitting at 2-4. I doubt Atlanta wants to trade him, but his value would be strong if that changes.”
Statistically, Stewart hasn’t made much of a dent yet. He has a 68.9 Pro Football Focus grade on the season, and his snap count has ticked up from five and four in his first two outings to eight against Miami. Even so, he remains a peripheral piece on a defensive front that has kept him on the outside looking in.
The knee hyperextension he suffered in training camp is one possible explanation, but it’s not the whole story. He hasn’t been a regular presence on October injury reports, and the injury happened nearly three months ago.
After the loss to Pittsburgh last month, Zac Taylor addressed Stewart’s status and made it clear the Bengals still see room for him to grow into a bigger role.
“Well, we got a really good defensive end group, and all four of those guys played well. There are going to be moments when we get Shemar more involved.
Yesterday just didn't work out that way and he's still in his ninth practice. Really started practicing three weeks ago.
Happy with him. He's got a great effort, great attitude,” Taylor said about Stewart after the loss to Pittsburgh last month.
“And so there will be moments we're able to get him more plays. There'll be times where maybe he goes from a small number to 25-30 (snaps).
You just never know. So he's had a good attitude about it.”
Stewart sat out that game but logged limited action in each of the next two.

Bengals Trade Deadline Outlook Starts With These Struggling Teams
With the Bengals sitting at 3-2 and still last in the AFC North after their bye week, the trade deadline conversation already has a practical edge to it. Cincinnati does not need a full overhaul, but it could use help in the right spots, which is why the search starts with teams that are stumbling and may be more willing to listen before the deadline closes in.
That means looking beyond the usual contenders and into the kind of rosters that can produce available veterans if the season keeps slipping away. The Washington Commanders, Tennessee Titans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Miami Dolphins all come into focus in that scan, and the Bengals are the sort of team that should be paying attention to any useful piece that becomes reachable, even if no move has materialized yet. Tee Higgins Keeps Giving Bengals Fans A Reason To Expect More
With a bye week behind them and Baltimore up next, the Bengals are getting a reminder of how much Tee Higgins can shape the conversation around this offense. Joe Burrow has leaned on Higgins as a reliable target all season, and the wideout has stood out as one of the teams most important options when throws get tight and the game plans get heavy.
The timing matters, too, because Lamar Jackson is expected back for the Ravens after missing their last game with an ankle sprain, which only raises the stakes for a matchup that already carries plenty of weight in the AFC North. Higgins has also made his mark against Baltimore before, and Cincinnati will be looking for another one of those outings as it tries to keep building momentum coming out of the break. [Read more 🡒]
