Bengals Stun Fans With Bold Moves to Boost Defense

Cincinnati's defense gets a major boost as newly signed safety Cook and edge rusher Mafe bring leadership and championship experience to tackle recent challenges.

The Cincinnati Bengals have officially bolstered their roster with the signings of Cook and former Seahawks edge rusher Boye Mafe, both on three-year deals. The duo, bringing a combined three Super Bowl rings, was introduced at a press conference at Paycor Stadium. Their championship experience is seen as a catalyst to reignite the Bengals' past playoff prowess from the 2021-2022 season.

Mafe steps in to fill the void left by the departures of Trey Hendrickson and Joseph Ossai, while Cook addresses the safety position, which has been in flux since Jessie Bates left after the 2022 season-the last time the Bengals reached the playoffs and the AFC Championship.

Cook, a Mount Healthy High School alum and former University of Cincinnati standout, is familiar with the local fanbase's concerns about the safety position. “I know there have been struggles, but I’m here to understand and help improve things,” Cook remarked.

He fondly recalled a moment with Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow during his rookie year in 2022 when Burrow offered some encouraging words during a game. That interaction left a lasting impact on Cook, who later played a pivotal role in the Chiefs' AFC Championship win over the Bengals that season.

Returning to Cincinnati, Cook aims to inject leadership and strong tackling into the Bengals' defense. “I’m excited to be back home and contribute to this team,” he said.

Mafe, known for his leadership, shared that he and Cook discussed how their championship experience could benefit the Bengals during their flight to Cincinnati. Despite a dip in his sack numbers over the past two seasons-dropping from nine in 2023 to six in 2024 and two last season-Mafe is eager to prove his potential.

“I know the questions about my production are there, but the coaches see what I can bring. I’m ready to tap into that potential,” he expressed.

Mafe is set to bring energy and a championship mindset to the Bengals' defense, aiming to replicate his 2023 form when he recorded 16 quarterback hits and nine sacks. “I’m here to boost the pass rush and help this defense on every down,” Mafe asserted. “I want to bring that championship mentality and elevate the game.”

With these new additions, the Bengals are poised to make significant strides, leveraging the experience and skills of Cook and Mafe to push for another deep playoff run.
