The Bengals are still hunting for answers at swing tackle, and a fresh name just landed on the market.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported Tuesday that the Dolphins are releasing Jamaree Salyer, and that he intends to sign with a team during the season. Salyer is currently on injured reserve, but he reached an injury settlement with Miami to get to free agency. The Dolphins had previously put him on season-ending IR.
“The Dolphins are releasing G/T Jamaree Salyer with an injury settlement, per source," Fowler posted on X. "The team previously placed him on season-ending IR (knee). Salyer, who started 40 games for the Chargers, plans to be healthy and sign with a team in-season."
For Cincinnati, that puts another experienced tackle into the mix as the team tries to sort out depth behind Amarius Mims and Orlando Brown Jr. Salyer would be a candidate to replace Cody Ford on the roster and provide insurance if the Bengals need help later on.
He’s 26 and brings a real body of work with him: 2,921 offensive line snaps over a four-year run with the Chargers this decade. Last season, he logged a 62.6 Pro Football Focus grade on 449 snaps after battling an injury in the middle of the year.
He’s not the kind of addition that would suddenly change the look of the room, and he’s not likely to walk in and win a starting job. But at a spot where reliable options are hard to find, he offers something the Bengals clearly need - experience.
That need has been obvious as training camp has worn on. Zac Taylor said Monday that the competition is still unresolved and that the team is looking for someone to seize the job.
"You're looking for, I've said the word a lot, consistency," the Bengals' head coach said about the battle on Monday. "Who just wants to take it and run with it? ...
We still have time on our hands and are still waiting to see someone just grab some of those jobs and take them. But we really got three practices this week.
It can go into next week as well. I know cuts are falling this week, but I really look at it as there being about five practices left to sort all that out.
"I think we're always open to everything," Taylor continued. "These guys are really competing.
I feel like I'd like to see someone grab it and us be able to say that. But certainly, with time still in practice, we got some stuff to sort out."
For now, Salyer is another veteran name for Cincinnati to consider as the Bengals keep working through the tackle picture.
