Bengals Get A Needed Boost As One Huge Week 5 Question Lingers

Key Bengals players Ja'Marr Chase and Bryan Cook are inching towards a return to the field, boosting the team's preparations for their upcoming clash against the Dolphins.

The Bengals got a pair of key names back on the practice field Thursday afternoon as they continued their prep for Sunday’s road matchup against Miami.

Wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, dealing with a concussion, and safety Bryan Cook, working through an ankle issue, were both seen in full pads heading out to practice, according to multiple local media members who captured footage of the session.

The expectation is that both players will be limited in practice, with their official statuses due around 4:15 p.m. ET. Cook is dealing with a lower-body injury, while Chase’s situation is the trickier one to track.

A concussion return can move fast if everything checks out, but it’s still a tight process. The source notes that it is very rare for a player to sustain a concussion in a Sunday game and then play the following Sunday. Chase, who is dealing with the first concussion of his NFL career, must clear the league’s return-to-participation steps before he can get back on the field.

“Every NFL player diagnosed with a concussion must follow a five-step process before being cleared to fully practice or participate in an NFL game,” The NFL rule states. “This process, developed from internationally accepted guidelines, ensures that each player receives consistent treatment.

“Each player and each concussion is unique, and there is no set time frame for return to participation. Team medical staff consider the player's current concussive injury, as well as past exposures and medical history, family history, and future risk in managing a player's care.

After a player has progressed through the five-step process and is cleared for full participation by his club physician, he must be seen and separately cleared by an Independent Neurological Consultant (INC), jointly approved by the NFL and NFLPA, who is not affiliated with any NFL club. Until cleared by this independent physician, a player may not return to contact practice or play in an NFL game.”

Chase is believed to be at least in Phase 3 of the concussion protocol, which would be a promising sign for his Week 5 availability as long as he avoids any lingering symptoms.

Cincinnati also had a few other injured players not fully participating Thursday, including Tee Higgins, who currently looks like a very long shot to play Sunday. Higgins was on the rehab field but did not work out in full pads.

Bryan Cook is going through an individual workout on the rehab field to begin practice.

Bengals Have A Personal Mike Ditka Connection Fans May Not Know

Mike Ditkas death stirred memories around the league this week, and for Bengals fans, the reaction carried a personal note through a current player with a strong feel for the old-school game. Ditka, a Hall of Fame tight end, coach and broadcaster, left a towering legacy as one of footballs most recognizable figures, from his playing days to the 1985 Bears team that became part of NFL lore.

The Bengals connection surfaced through Ted Karras, who remembered Ditka after hearing the news. It was the kind of reminder that the NFLs past is never all that far away, especially when a player whose influence stretched across generations still resonates with someone on a current Cincinnati roster. JaMarr Chase Still Has One Big Week 5 Hurdle

JaMarr Chases Week 5 outlook has moved in the right direction, and for the Bengals that alone is a welcome development after a week of watching the injury report closely. Chase was listed as questionable along with Justin Jefferson, but his progress in practice has been enough to keep optimism alive, especially with other notable receivers around the league already being ruled out or, in some cases, cleared to play.

The remaining wait now centers on the final piece of the process, and it is the sort of detail that can shape Sunday availability even after practice has gone well. Cincinnati has reason to feel better about where this is headed, but until that last step is completed, Chase still has one more hurdle to clear before the Bengals can count on having him back in the lineup. Nico Collins Carries New Week 5 Pressure For Texans Fans

With the first bye week arriving, fantasy managers are already sorting through replacement options and trying to squeeze value out of every matchup. The lineup advice for this slate leans on recent usage, injury updates and game script, with players like Jameis Winston and Kyle Monangai getting attention because their roles and opponents line up well for Week 5 decisions.

For Cincinnati fans, the most relevant nugget sits on the other side of that DFS conversation, where Brown is drawing notice as a running back play with a favorable setup against Miami. The Dolphins have been a soft spot for backs all season, and the case for Brown rests on volume, scoring chances and the kind of offensive environment that can turn a steady workload into a big fantasy day. The only real question is how aggressive managers want to get in a spot that looks inviting, but still leaves room for one more surprise. [Read more 🡒]
