Bengals Eye 8604-Yard QB for Future Roster Depth

Bengals weigh future QB prospects as they assess Athan Kaliakmanis for solidifying their lineup behind Joe Burrow.

The Cincinnati Bengals are in the market for a long-term backup quarterback, and it seems they've set their sights on Rutgers' Athan Kaliakmanis. With Jake Browning's departure and the addition of veteran Josh Johnson, the Bengals are considering their options, especially with Joe Burrow's occasional health concerns.

While seasoned players like Joe Flacco could still be in the mix, both he and Johnson are nearing the twilight of their careers. Enter Kaliakmanis, who is catching Cincinnati's attention as they explore more sustainable backup solutions.

NFL Draft expert Ryan Fowler reports that Kaliakmanis is taking a "30 visit" to Cincinnati, indicating the Bengals' genuine interest in the young quarterback. Kaliakmanis started his college journey at Minnesota before transferring to Rutgers, where he wrapped up his collegiate career.

Throughout his time in college, Kaliakmanis showed consistent improvement, amassing 8,604 passing yards with 55 touchdowns against 27 interceptions. He also demonstrated mobility, rushing for 459 yards and scoring 10 touchdowns on the ground.

His 2025 season was particularly impressive, with career highs in completion rate (62.2%), passing yards (3,124), and touchdowns (20), while throwing seven interceptions. Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 205 pounds, he fits the mold of an ideal quarterback.

While the Bengals aren't drafting him with the expectation of him becoming a starter, the hope is that Kaliakmanis could develop into a solid QB2 behind Burrow. Though other options remain in the draft and free agency, Cincinnati's interest in Kaliakmanis signals their commitment to securing a reliable backup for the future.
