Bengals Could Catch A Break With Falcons Pass Rush In Doubt

The Atlanta Falcons face uncertainty as a back injury setback could delay edge rusher James Pearce Jr.'s highly-anticipated season debut.

The Falcons got a mix of good news and bad news on their injury report heading into Week 9, with Sunday’s international matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals in Madrid, Spain bringing a few key names back into focus.

Atlanta officially cleared defensive back Billy Bowman Jr. to play, while linebacker Divine Deablo is listed as questionable. Edge rusher James Pearce Jr. also carries a questionable tag after a setback with his back. Running back Brian Robinson Jr. and receiver Zachariah Branch have both been ruled out with hamstring injuries.

Pearce’s situation is the one that changes the picture the most. After serving his eight-game suspension, he was expected to make his season debut against Cincinnati. Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich had already said the Falcons planned to use Pearce mostly as a pass rusher while keeping an eye on his workload.

That plan is now up in the air. Head coach Kevin Stefanski said Friday that Pearce had a “flare up” in his back injury, and Atlanta will watch how he responds over the next two days before making a final call on whether he can go. His status matters for a pass rush that could use another boost against Burrow.

The Falcons are already thinner off the edge after Samson Ebukam landed on Injured Reserve this week. That leaves more work for Charles Snowden and Za'Darius Smith, who could see his workload rise after dealing with an injury over the last several weeks. Another possibility is moving inside linebacker Harold Perkins closer to the edge in pass-rushing situations.

Cameron Thomas handled a heavy load last week in Tampa, logging 47 snaps. Snowden followed at edge with 26.

Bowman’s return is one of the brighter spots for Atlanta. The rookie defensive back missed the last two games with a hamstring injury, but he was a full participant earlier in the week and stayed there through the Falcons’ practices in Spain.

That should help a secondary that needs a cleaner performance, especially with Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow leading the offense. Bowman gives Atlanta a chance to tighten things up after the defense struggled against Tampa Bay.

Deablo is still working through a forearm injury, but his week trended in the right direction. He was limited earlier in the week before returning as a full participant Friday, a positive sign after he missed the previous two games.

Robinson remains out for a third straight game as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury. He has also missed the last two games, and Khalil Herbert is expected to back him up again this week.

So while the Falcons have some encouraging signs going into Madrid, Pearce’s setback has added another layer of uncertainty. With a few players still waiting on final clearance, the next two days will shape Atlanta’s defensive plans for Week 9 against Cincinnati.

Bengals Still Have One Defensive Need They Cant Ignore

The Bengals already took a major swing on defense by landing Dexter Lawrence during the 2026 NFL Draft, a move that changed the look of their front in a hurry. Even after that kind of addition, though, there is still plenty of work left for a unit that has not been airtight behind the line, especially at linebacker where Barrett Carter and Demetrius Knight Jr. have had issues in coverage.

Philadelphias situation has added another layer to the conversation, with the Eagles suddenly facing uncertainty after Jalen Hurts injury. That has naturally led to some speculation about whether Cincinnati could try to pry loose Zack Baun, a linebacker who would fit a clear need for the Bengals if the Eagles decide to listen. Bengals-Steelers Rematch Already Has The Extra Edge Fans Expected

The Bengals next meeting with Pittsburgh is already carrying the sort of edge these rivalry games tend to collect, and Jalen Ramsey helped make sure of it when he spoke about the matchup this week. The Steelers cornerback acknowledged the challenge Cincinnatis passing game presents, with JaMarr Chase and Tee Higgins looming as the obvious focal points for a defense that knows it will have to be sharp.

For Bengals fans, the backdrop only adds to the anticipation. Chases past suspension for spitting on Ramsey still hangs over the series, and Cincinnatis recent results have kept the stakes high in the AFC North. If the Bengals take care of business against Atlanta, the rematch could arrive with both teams sitting in a familiar place near the top of the division, which is exactly the kind of setup that turns a regular-season game into something louder. Burrow And Tee Higgins Are Making Cincinnatis Bet Look Right

When the Bengals drafted Joe Burrow and Tee Higgins in 2020, they were betting that a young quarterback and a big-bodied receiver could grow together into a defining part of the offense. Four years later, that pairing has become one of the clearest reasons Cincinnatis passing game has stayed dangerous, with Higgins continuing to produce even while dealing with injuries and carving out a place alongside JaMarr Chase at the top of the receiver hierarchy.

Higgins rise matters beyond the box score because it reinforces the idea that the Bengals did not just stumble into a star trio, they built one. Burrow has trusted him in key moments, and Higgins has rewarded that trust with steady production and the kind of downfield presence that changes how defenses have to play Cincinnati, even as the contract questions around him linger in the background.
