Bengals Bring Back A Familiar Look Tied To Winning And One Scare

As the Cincinnati Bengals revive a winning uniform combo for their 2026 season opener, history and superstition collide on the field.

The Bengals are set to make a little uniform history in Miami, and it comes with a familiar look.

Cincinnati announced months ago that it will hold another “Open in Orange” game to open the 2026 season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That setup already has a bit of baggage for the Bengals.

They lost the first “Open in Orange” game in 2024, a 16-10 defeat to the New England Patriots. In that game, Cincinnati wore orange pants with its orange jerseys, a combo it has not worn again since.

This time, the Bengals are bringing back the same look they used in last year’s Week 2 home opener: orange jerseys, white pants with orange stripes and orange socks. It’s a rare uniform combination for the franchise, but one that has worked every time it’s shown up.

The Bengals have never lost in that setup. The only other appearance came in 2021 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, when Cincinnati won 24-21 on Thursday night football.

The orange jerseys themselves have been a strong spot for Cincinnati since they were introduced in 2004. The Bengals are 28-11-1 in orange, a .713 winning percentage. In every other jersey during that stretch, they are 147-166-3.

That recent orange run had gone cold before last year’s win over Jacksonville. Cincinnati had dropped three straight games in the orange tops before snapping the skid.

The last few orange-jersey appearances have produced plenty of results, good and bad. The Bengals beat Jacksonville 31-27 on Sept. 14, 2025, then fell to Pittsburgh 44-38 on Dec.

1, 2024. Before that came the 16-10 loss to New England on Sept.

8, 2024. Cincinnati also lost to Pittsburgh 16-10 in 2023, beat Kansas City 27-24 in 2022, and knocked off Kansas City again 34-31 in January 2022.

The full list goes back to the first orange-jersey game in 2004, when Cincinnati beat Dallas 26-3 while wearing black pants. Since then, the orange look has become one of the Bengals’ most successful uniform choices, even if the exact pant combination they’re bringing back now has only shown up twice.

Bengals First-Round Pick Is Already Becoming A Real Roster Debate

Shemar Stewart entered his rookie season with the kind of athletic upside that can tempt a coaching staff to keep investing reps, but the Bengals have not been able to get much back from their first-round pick so far. Injuries have slowed his start, and his playing time has been limited enough that he has yet to carve out anything close to a steady role on the defensive front.

Stewarts situation has now turned into the kind of roster conversation teams usually hope to avoid this early in a draft class. Cincinnati still has every reason to want his talent to show up on Sundays, but with very few snaps in recent games, the question is no longer just when he breaks through. It is whether the Bengals can keep waiting for that breakthrough while trying to manage the rest of the season around him. [Read more 🡒]

Joe Burrow Gave Bengals Fans A Laugh They Really Needed

The Bengals early-season momentum has hit a rough patch, with two straight losses sending the mood around the team from upbeat to uneasy. As Cincinnati tries to reset before its next trip against the Miami Dolphins, Joe Burrow offered a small reminder that not every tense stretch has to stay tense for long.

During a recent press conference, Burrow gave reporters and fans a laugh when he reacted to the word galled with apparent unfamiliarity. It was a light moment in a week when the Bengals could use one, and it briefly shifted attention away from the skid and back to the quarterbacks quick wit as Cincinnati looks to stop the slide. Joe Burrow Is Pushing A Bengals Offensive Change That Still Isn't Working

The Bengals have spent time trying to build more of their offense from under center, a shift that was supposed to add variety and help them find another gear. It showed up in their game plan again before the recent loss to the Jaguars, but as the game unfolded, Cincinnati moved away from it and leaned back on what has long been more familiar.

Joe Burrow said the team is still committed to giving that approach more reps, even if the execution is not there yet. There are other moving parts for Cincinnati too, with Bryce Young potentially in line for more snaps because of injuries among the top receivers, while the defense continues to deal with problems covering and tackling tight ends.
