Bengals Bring Back A 2021 Fan Favorite And Reopen Old Debate

The Bengals make a bold move by appointing a once-critical former player as their morale booster for a pivotal game against the Jaguars.

The Cincinnati Bengals are leaning on a familiar face for Week 4, and it’s a choice that won’t land the same way with everyone.

With Jacksonville coming to town and the Bengals trying to steady things after a Week 3 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cincinnati announced former tight end C.J. Uzomah as the team’s Ruler of the Jungle. It’s the kind of pregame move meant to juice the crowd and turn home-field energy into an edge, especially with the defense having just been exposed and the secondary depth set to be tested against one of the NFL’s elite offenses.

Uzomah is hardly a random pick. He was a central figure in Cincinnati’s 24-21 win over the Jaguars on Thursday Night Football in 2021, a game that helped shape the Bengals’ season.

In that one, he caught five passes for 95 yards and scored both of Cincinnati’s receiving touchdowns. He also hauled in the key catch that set up the game-winning field goal, part of Joe Burrow’s memorable “can’t zero me” Mic’d-Up moment.

The Bengals leaned into that history with their announcement, posting: “Welcome back to Rule The Jungle, C.J. pic.twitter.com/KeZ2U6mu4y”

Still, the decision comes with baggage. Uzomah was a major part of the Bengals’ Super Bowl run in 2021, but he became a less popular figure after leaving for the New York Jets and criticizing the organization.

On the Bussin’ with the Boys podcast, he said, "I don't know what more they did, but at the time that I went... like, the cafeteria was in the basketball gym, and they would just set up tables," Uzomah said. "...

Everyone knows, like, they're going to have some problems retaining Joey B back there."

That makes his return in this role a little more complicated than the usual former-player tribute. The Bengals have often turned to beloved names like Anthony Muñoz and Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson for the honor, but Uzomah doesn’t fit that mold quite as cleanly because of what he said after departing.

Even so, his own view of Cincinnati has shifted since then. In a Yahoo Sports article, Uzomah said, "I have orange and black in my veins … I'm a Bengals fan, and I will be for life.

For me right now, this is a place that's close to home, (so) why not? Truthfully, even when I left, I was like, I want to end my career in Cincinnati," Uzomah said.

"The timing worked out well with Cincinnati, and it was just time."

Bengals Linebacker Struggles Just Reopened A Familiar Reunion Debate

After a rough defensive showing, a familiar name popped right back into the conversation for Cincinnati. Germaine Pratt, the former Bengals linebacker and team captain, responded on social media to fan chatter about bringing him back, reminding everyone that his connection to the franchise never really faded even after he moved on to the Raiders and Colts last season.

The backdrop here is a linebacker room that could use some steadiness, especially with a young group still trying to find its footing. Pratt spent part of the offseason as a coaching assistant, which only added to the sense that a reunion would not be a wild idea, but a practical one if Cincinnati wants more veteran leadership in the middle of the defense. Andrei Iosivas Rumored Relationship Just Sparked A Very Relatable Bengals Complaint

Andrei Iosivas has become part of an offseason conversation in Cincinnati for more than what he does on the field. Reports tying the Bengals wide receiver to social media influencer Gia Duddy have circulated since training camp, and Duddys own posts have added fuel to the chatter, including a vlog from the teams practice facility and a glimpse at her life around the city.

What has resonated most with Bengals fans, though, is a complaint that feels almost too familiar in an NFL town: Duddy said she has been frustrated by losing friends because of trades. It is the kind of side effect that comes with the leagues constant churn, and it has only amplified the attention around a relationship neither the Bengals nor the people involved have confirmed publicly. Bengals Have A Growing Dexter Lawrence Concern Officials Arent Fixing

Through the first three games, Dexter Lawrence has already become a problem teams are trying to solve with extra bodies and creative protection plans, and the Bengals have noticed how much attention the disruptive defensive tackle is drawing. Opposing offenses have leaned on double teams to slow him down, a sign of how quickly he can wreck a game when he gets free.

The bigger concern came from the Steelers, who used a blocking technique that involved grabbing and lifting Lawrences leg, a tactic that appears to run afoul of NFL holding rules and carries obvious injury risk. Lawrence and the Bengals have raised the issue, but the lack of a flag has left the door open to whether other teams will try it too, and whether officials will eventually step in before it becomes a wider problem.
