The Bengals’ backup quarterbacks kept the preseason momentum rolling in the second half against Chicago, and Sean Clifford made sure the scoreboard kept moving.
Clifford capped his opening drive with a 20-yard touchdown strike to Noah Thomas, pushing Cincinnati ahead 24-9 against the Bears. Josh Johnson had handed the offense over to Clifford, and the veteran quarterback responded with a clean, productive series right out of the gate.
The drive featured a little bit of everything from Clifford. He connected with K.
Williams for 13 yards on a short throw to the left, picked up 5 yards on a scramble to the right, and then took a false start penalty that wiped out an incomplete pass to Cha. Jones.
Clifford came right back with a 26-yard completion to Cha. Jones along the right side before hitting K.
Williams again for 11 yards to help keep the chains moving.
The finishing touch came when Clifford went deep right to Noah Thomas for the touchdown, giving Thomas the score and adding another strong preseason moment for Cincinnati’s reserve quarterbacks.
Clifford is still in the fight for a practice squad spot, the same place he finished last season. He joined the Bengals’ practice squad in September 2025 after entering the league as a college free agent signee of Green Bay in 2023.
Before that, he spent his rookie year on the Packers’ active roster, then remained on their practice squad for the entire ’24 season. In college, he was a three-time All-Big Ten Honorable Mention selection at Penn State.
The touchdown sequence and Clifford’s opening drive log showed a quarterback keeping things steady and efficient when given the chance, exactly the kind of outing that can matter in a roster battle.
