Scott Satterfield Knows Cincinnati's Opener Will Answer One Big Question

Cincinnati Bearcats prepare for a challenging season opener against Boston College, with Coach Satterfield emphasizing the importance of setting the tone for the season.

Cincinnati is already staring down a tricky opener, and Scott Satterfield knows exactly what kind of test awaits when the Bearcats face Boston College on September 5.

At Big 12 Football Media Days on Wednesday, Satterfield was asked about the week one matchup, and he pointed back to last season’s opener against Nebraska as the kind of atmosphere and uncertainty that can define a first game.

"Last year we played a talented Nebraska team in Arrowhead Stadium, which is probably the loudest stadium I've been in. It was packed, a great environment, and it came down to the last play. No different this year, I think anytime you start your first game against a team like Boston College, a team that's going to have a lot of great players, a good coaching staff, there's a lot of unknowns... there's a lot of little cat-and-mouse going on in the beginning of games."

Satterfield has handled Boston College before, going 2-1 against the Eagles during his time as Louisville’s head coach. This time, though, he’ll be lining up against Bill O’Brien, who has never coached against him.

For Satterfield, the message is simple: the Bearcats have to be sharp from the jump.

"The big thing for us is we have to be our best in the first game. And that's why this summer and August camp has to be intense.

You've got to be ready to go that first week; we certainly want to get out to a great game and unlike last year when we didn't win that first game, you want to come out and get that first win right off the bat... We'll have a great crowd, and that should be an advantage for us."

Bearcats Season May Hinge On One Frontcourt Question

Jerrod Calhouns first Cincinnati roster is built with plenty of guard depth, and that gives the Bearcats a chance to play with more pace and more ballhandling than they had a year ago. The bigger question sits closer to the basket, where the frontcourt looks thinner and the staff will need a transfer like Tyler Tejada from Towson to do a lot of the heavy lifting as a bigger wing and power forward option.

Tejada brings real production with him, coming off a season in which he scored at a high level and filled up the box score, but the fit is not as simple as plugging in last years numbers. Cincinnati is asking him to adjust to the Big 12 and to a different offensive role, and how smoothly that transition goes could end up shaping just how far this new-look Bearcats team can go. Former Bearcat Baba Miller Is Already Making NBA Noise

Baba Miller is wasting no time trying to turn Summer League buzz into something more lasting. The former Bearcat and 36th pick in the 2026 NBA Draft has looked comfortable with the Clippers, flashing the kind of versatility that made him appealing in the first place while showing he can contribute in a variety of ways on both ends.

Millers latest outing added to that momentum, and it came after a solid debut that hinted he might already be settling in at the NBA level. With confidence building and his role becoming clearer in these exhibition games, the next question is whether the early noise turns into something more meaningful once the real competition starts.
