Cincinnati’s new starting quarterback, JC French IV, landed near the bottom of The Athletic’s latest FBS quarterback tiers, a reminder that plenty of people are still waiting to be convinced he can replace Brendan Sorsby.
In the rankings put together by Sam Khan Jr. and Antonio Morales after speaking with coaches, general managers and others around the country this summer, French was placed in Tier 6, the second-lowest group on the list. The article described that tier as: "Former Power 4 blue-chip recruits who have found new homes and are trying to make the most of their new opportunities, plus some veterans who have not put it all together yet and young QBs with bright futures who are just now getting their chance. And there are a lot of quality Group of 6 QBs teams can win with,"
French did at least move up from where he sat a year ago, climbing from 96th in 2025 to 79th this season. The Athletic pointed to his experience - 36 games and 26 starts at Georgia Southern - along with his arm talent and mobility. "He spins the ball really well," a Big 12 personnel director said.
Still, the concerns are obvious. The article noted that French is much smaller than Sorsby, who was listed at 6-3, 235, and said that while French posted solid numbers and improved his interception rate from 2.7 percent in 2024 to 2.1 percent in 2025, he doesn’t stand out to opposing defenses.
Last season’s production was solid, but hardly eye-popping. French threw 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions while completing 63.8% of his passes and averaging 7.5 yards per attempt.
He was also graded 86th among quarterbacks by Pro Football Focus at 65.4. Ball security was only average, with a 70th-ranked turnover-worthy play rate of 2.6%, and he was too often brought down when pressure arrived, posting a 21.7% pressure-to-sack ratio that ranked 15th worst nationally.
That inconsistency is part of why one Sun Belt head coach was blunt in his assessment: “I thought that kid was just average, to be honest,” a Sun Belt head coach said in the article. “He’s so up and down.”
The setup in Cincinnati should give French a better runway than he had at Georgia Southern, especially up front. The Bearcats are expected to have a top-25 offensive line nationally, and possibly a top-15 unit. Even so, French played behind a pass-blocking group that graded well last season, with Georgia Southern ranking 13th nationally in PFF’s 2025 team pass-blocking grade.
The problem was what happened after the protection held. Georgia Southern still allowed 30 sacks, which ranked 104th nationally, because French did not get the ball out quickly enough or escape pressure at an average rate. The Eagles’ run blocking was also an issue, as they gave up 71 tackles for loss, ranked 84th nationally, and finished 88th in run-blocking grade at 56.8.
Cincinnati should be better in both areas this fall, but the bigger question remains whether French can raise his game when the Big 12 pressure starts coming. If he doesn’t, the Bearcats could have a hard time getting bowl-eligible this season.
